Lots of earthworms mean you have very good soil. Adding organic matter feeds the worms their wast mater is very good fertalizer.

I did. Corn needs lots of nitrogen to make the stalk. when the seed sprouted I made a small hole a couple inches from each stalk. And, placed about a 1/4 cup fertilizer. They did good.

Also, if you save the top. Let it dry a couple of days and plant it will sprout roots and grow. Mine has fruited twice.

I also live in zone 6. The most important thing, to keep the corm from rotting is to keep it dry during winter and until the ground starts to warm. A little mulch then a tarp does it for me.

I am St Louis MO zone 6. When I planted my Basjoos years ago I put several inches of fresh new wood clips over the area. Since then When I cut off the frozen dead plants I lay them across the area....
