Re: Using bananas as a garbage disposal = super happy bananas

That looks very good! That's what I do and it has worked well. In Florida with the hydroponic like sand, wood chips from a tree company are very good to hold water and build soil!

Re: Arctic Blast

That's awful. :( Really discouraging to have that happen, again. Here's some advice though- watch out for global warming, it's going to be the death of us all! :ha:

Re: Hurricane Ian

Sorry you lost the Goldfinger and Praying Hands! 100 mph sounds awful. I think we had 60-70 mph, but our neighbors banana grove is in ruins, and ours is thrashed.

I have a question for people who...

Re: Tall namwa problems

I had something like that happen to one of mine last summer. Here is the thread:

Re: roundup and bananas

We use plastic grass edging to keep the grass out. Spraying weed killer is probably going to be a pretty regular thing with invasive grass, and it will be sucked up by the banana roots as some...

Re: Ripen bananas on the tree or cut once start turning yellow?

I do what momoese does. After the first couple times of leaving the bunch whole after harvesting, and picking off ones from the whole thing, and having ones I'm not trying to pull off fall off, and...

Re: Is that a flower!? o_O

I'm sorry, that's disappointing you can't at least identify it.

Congratulations on the Orinoco flower! :woohoonaner: It's looking good. Looks like it's got some leaves so you should be in for some...

Re: Is that a flower!? o_O

Unfortunate it decided to flower now, but congrats! Like you said, hopefully you will be able to confirm it's the real one.

Re: My First Bananas of the Year

Congratulations! I really like Raja Puri. In my opinion they are the best a couple days after turning yellow and then they are sweet and tart. It's the only banana variety I have found that I like...

Re: Anyone growing FHIA-03 Sweetheart?

I got one small bunch and took the plant out. The fruit were very, very mushy even when just turned yellow. Flavor wasn't really good either. Maybe it was just conditions. But apparently some people...

Re: Florida freeze

In Orlando most leaves that were not covered are dead. Going to have some miserable puny dwarf Cavendish bunches. Some bunches were mature enough that they will be fine, just not fill out any more.

Re: Valor_X & Backyard Banana Joe - Who can fruit a Praying Hands pup first?

Valor_X, that's horrible. Really stinks it had to flower right now. That large sucker is looking good, hopefully it will flower mid-summer. My bunch ripened and were pretty good! You definitely have...

Re: Mystery Banana - Need help identifying this one!

I would say a Tall Orinoco. It could be a Dwarf Orinoco because it’s short, but it has a thin trunk so I would say it’s a Tall (Dwarf bananas tend to have thick trunks).

Re: What did you harvest today (bananas)

Amazing! 70lbs is incredible.

My Dwarf Cavendish is blooming late, again, just like last year. Probably another under filled, blossom end rotted bunch, due to be harvested in February when the...

Re: Valor_X & Backyard Banana Joe - Who can fruit a Praying Hands pup first?

Your Praying Hands looks great! Those leaves coming out are regular surfboards! :08:

The bunch is filling in slowly, so maybe two more months.

Re: Pisang Ceylon

Awesome! My bunch ripened as well but I haven't posted pics yet. I would say that taste description is definitely accurate. Manzano is still my favorite, but they were delicious. One thing I will...
