alternatively you could have two layers of clear plastic/greenhouse poly/ clear vapour barrier on either side of a wood frame to create an airspace between the layers and use c9 christmas lights on a thermo cube
green dragan uses the thermo cube that keeps the temp between 2 and 7C or 35 and 45F
depending on the plant you might want to get the next warmest thermo cube
you can also just leave the lights on but you would need to monitor the temperature to make sure it isnt getting too hot in there

Sad sight this morning. All my nanners froze.
It got down to 19F with 5F wind chill.
To be clear this is definitely not normal winter weather for us here in the south.
No doubt everything is going to die down to the ground.

I was able to save my variegated bananas, a truly tiny, and a small red which I had potted and brought indoors.

So sorry to hear this is definitely a historic cold event. Hopefully we get a break from these events for a while! If not I guess we have to get creative. You can put chicken wire around the bananas and stuff them full of straw, this protects the main pstem from freezing and they can recover more easily.

i like that one. the bottom straw would compost some and help for next year.

the downside would be the pups, it probably would kill them. but the plants would put out new ones too.

Also I had -6°C in July 2021 in Lucianópolis in Brazil overnight, at this time my wife was in the hospital in Hamburg in Germany, so that we could move only on April 28th 2022 from Germany to Brazil. Most of my bananas survived in Brazil and came back like Musa basjoo in Germany. When here such one cold snap with Antarctic polar air does occur again, then the situation will be better because I do live here with residence permit (CRNM) and able to protect my bananas, palms, jackfruit trees and tropical fruit trees by possibilities of mulching, heating lamps, gas heating, wrapping and burning wood coal in barrels and boiling hot water in cans and barrels. So like some of you e.g. in Florida, Texas and California.

I think we got to 15 here one morning for two hrs. I just caged my bananas and throw clear bags over top and wrapped the cage with clear plastic sheeting. Threw tarps over other ones. Then past few mornings we have been in the 19’s.

That video from the guy in zone 5 was cool to watch. Seems like an expensive way to protect plants but looks awesome.Polycarbonate Panels from Lowes are $50.00ea and never heard or seen any window or door tracks like he used.

if i try something like this i may end up using greenhouse poly (actually vinyl is what i have a roll of)
and a wood frame with the layers of poly physically held separated by the wood frame
where i want to build i may have to do 3 or 4 layers(in combination with other methods) but as he says in the video the bigger the zone difference the more protection required
