I kind of wondered about that myself. The nursery where I got it called it dwarf so that's why I did too. It's a good healthy plant though and I'm thrilled it is finally fruiting. |

They are all different sizes .. the soil on that side of my house just dont seem to support bananas . But this time I used a lot of compost and cow and horse manure plus fertilizer. They seem to be close to removal, just now starting to get a little lighter in color it bloomed in mid January

the bananas taste great from that thing SWEET.. I freeze them for smoothies and eat some fresh.. last time they tasted different than the first bunch and they were lots smaller ! But they are almost as good as my Apples .. I figure this year Ill get the soil completely built up over there and all will be well .. Ill re-test the PH in the fall after some more time has past

Said "Welcome to Bananas" 334 Times | Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas) I was going to rip out my Saba mat as it was only flowering in late fall and any winter freezes would destroy the fruit. It is a huge beautiful mat that produces no fruit. It has now sent out another shoot that will have time to mature in warm weather. This is its last chance. |

My wife will probably use it as a 'cooking' banana, but I'd like to try at least one ripe un-cooked one as a comparison. Of course, at this stage I have little idea how large the bunch would be. I wouldn't expect much since it is the first one to fruit from that batch. 2 days after seeing the flag Last edited by Yug : 06-13-2012 at 07:22 AM. Reason: add photo | |

Said "Welcome to Bananas" 191 Times | Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas) What is the caliper of the fruiting pstem at 1 ft up from the ground? Plantain chips, or tostones, from totally unripe is a great way to go. Then you can eat ripe ones later. Personally, I say "yuk" - a cooking banana is a cooking banana. Those members that said they like ripe Orinoco made me queasy talking about it. People who grew up with eating these, like me, don't break the rules. A goofy expression I made up is "Yo me embarfo" since I understand but don't speak Spanish. |
