Update on my Ae Ae - I'm beginning to see stripes, now. So far I see 9 hands, and I think
the first one had about 11 fingers, and I haven't looked that close at the other ones. Hell,
I'm just happy to have gotten this far.

Well, you'd really need to ask Gabe; this is my first experience with this type. I'll put my info into the 'Wiki' and as others add theirs, hopefully we can get more accurate data.

Makes sense; thanks for putting your info in the Wiki though. Every little bit helps. What has been some of the sooner-bearing varieties in your experience Yug?

Well, Dwarf Cavendish, Dwarf Namwah, and the GM 'Cocos' are supposed to be pretty quick. I'm not sure if the smaller size has something to do with it or not. Maybe the taller ones take longer to get to the right height to bloom? I'm still pretty much a novice at this, though. There are some 'veteran' growers that have much greater wealth of experience than I. They should answer that question instead.

I'm thinking the smaller size may be a factor. Those ones you listed are usually expected to grow from sucker to bloom in about 7-9 months in our tropical climate, and some taller varieties, while also capable of blooming in less than a year, take a little longer it seems. So generally shorter may be faster with certain varieties. And yes I'd love for an "expert" to collaborate on this, although you're doing a pretty great job yourself

In my experience in South Florida quickest from planting to flowering, to fruit have been Cavendish, Dwarf Namwa, Hua Moa, SH 3640, and Vundi. (Not in order of quick fruit).

Slow producers have been Saba, Cardaba, FHIA-1 (Goldfinger), Praying Hands.

I hope this helps, Good growing to you!!

Starting to shoot is a tall Hawaiian cultivar that was sold to me as Popoulu (which it is not). It is 18 to 20 feet tall shoots prolifically but takes 5 months for fruit to fill out. Does anyone know what variety this may be?

Interesting that all but one of your slow producers are in the Saba subgroup (Saba, Cardaba, and Praying Hands). From what I've read, that is typical of that subgroup in the tropics, too.

Goldfinger being a standout for being slow is atypical, though. I wonder why yours behaves that way.

I'm pretty sure that none of the traditional Hawaiian cultivars get 18-20' of p-stem, but I'll consult the new "bible" on Hawaiian bananas. I would guess from the height it is one of the tall clones of "Hawaiian Apple" = tall Brazilian. But that guess is based on the height alone. Why don't you post some photos on the ID section of the site and describe the flavor?

I can no longer get pictures onto the website is why they don't appear. I've harvested one of four bunches that the mat has produced. I harvested one of them early only because a freeze was about to take them anyway. They were too small to eat as ripe fruit.

The other bunches were damaged long before they were ready.

I had that same issue with the picture posting for a while, but after pming MediaHound about the issue he was able to fix it, so I would recommend you send him a message. Sorry to hear about your bunch troubles; inconvenient blooming soon before winter seems to be a recurring issue with growers who live in places that gets frost.

Thanks for your post about the quick fruiting varieties. How long would you say the usually take to fruit?

Starting with a pup, good soil and ample water, 10 to 15 months. In the Bahamas soil for a good mat and constant sufficient water is problematic. The constant sufficient water is a problem out on my farm. I experience many similar problems on my farm as is experienced in the Bahamas. (I'm on the dry side of South Florida). Add 6 to 8 months if drought is experience within the first year. Many people do not realize that when we are not in the rainy season in South Florida and the Bahamas, the climate is semi-arid.

I love your insight in both our growing conditions. There is an issue here with good soil, although in New Providence the soil is generally much better than some outer islands and many people grow bananas in their backyards. It is quite dry throughout a good part of the year, in which case the bananas would have to have to be watered. I'm not sure that sufficient water is an issue for my yard at least since I only have a few plants, mulch heavily and can water them with my hose if it hasn't rained in a few days. How often should they be watered that constant sufficient water is problematic on your farm? It sounds as though you don't them irrigated?

Thanks again for the feedback; it's great to talk to someone who understands my specific gardening situation

I've been "farming" in Florida since I was a old enough to plant. I took a Tropical Island Biology course at the University where the field work was done on San Salvador island. I've also had many geology classes where the geology soils and Paleoenvironment of Florida and the Bahamas have been compared. This really helps me when the environment here is an issue. I hope this helps.

I do irrigate on my farm, but it is a remote site on an island. I cannot water sufficiently during the dry season for good growth, but only to "maintain" them. Time and cost are issues.

Good afternoon Mark,

After doing some research, comparing brachs, leaf lengths, growth habit, and fruit characteristics I think you are correct, it is a Brazilian Tall. Thank you,

Just did a census this morning, with 19 plants fruiting. 2 Williams, 2 Gros Michel, 1 Sucrier, 4 Ice Cream, and 10 Dwarf Brazillian. For at least the past 6 months there have been around 15 in some stage between flower and harvest. Even with that many, haven't harvested anything in 3 weeks and probably won't for a couple more!
