Here is a photo of Namwa banana bunch six weeks old.

Hopefully it will mature but only if there is no freeze!

Well it was sold to me as pisang raja. (GB) Someone more experienced, please chime in. I need to take another photo, number of hands stopped at 5. Kinda disappointing.....

The variety, whatever it is, has not been near as robust as some of the others that I have. As the mother stem matured, the whole plant seemed to really slow down. Unless the flavor blows my mind, I could see a case for replacing it just for productivity sake. Thanks.

First time plantings sometimes produce low yield. And choking too as it appears in the pic. My Datil had it bad and had to cut away leaves and split the top of the pstem to expose the short peduncle with the top hand. Fingers were small too.

The next pstem was perfectly normal and had a big yield and much larger fingers. Will post a pic of the new Datil flower tomorrow.

Pisang Raja fruit is fantastic. Nick brought me some and I made another trip to his place to get a PR pup.

Could be. Don't cut off the male bud. If the male flowers and bracts do not fall off the rachis, then it probably really is Pisang Raja.

Not So Datil la Lima boom at 6 ft. It's still a good fruit with a big bunch even if it's unknown.

For what its worth, the pisang raja looks similar to mine. The yield isn't fantastic. I've harvested a few bunches around the glades and usually you don't get more than 30 lbs of fruit. It's certainly no FHIA-17 in terms of yield.

Dan, it's not unknown. It's Rajapuri.

Mark --- I grew the RP for 3 years and it always flowered way taller. This thing from ars grin always fruits a foot and a half shorter.

Here's a pic from Nov 2011 of my RP bunch. Do they really look the same to you?

This is my RP and they fruit at 6' the second image shows RP with a 5' p-stem. When I purchased my plant it was removed from a mat that had a 7' p-stem with fruit.

They really do look the same to me. The very big bloom (relative to the plant size) and the very colorful female flowers are traits of Rajapuri. The height it's fruiting for you is also very typical of that cultivar. Are you growing this in exactly the same spot you grew your known RP? If not, I'd be inclined to attribute the difference in height to a microclimate in your yard, or something like that. If you grow them side by side and they are different, then they are different! But it's not uncommon to have sports of the same cultivar that differ a bit in height. Aside from height, are there any noticeable differences that can't be attributed to microclimate or some small difference between what the mats get (e.g., water)?

This mat is 20 ft from the original RP location. I can't compare them except by photo comparison. The orig RP mat was removed and replaced by Chini Champa. I feel better now about the ID. The next time I email Brian Irish at USDA ars grin in PR I'll say thanks for the RP.

Nick --- this thing is planted 10 ft away from the Pisang Raja I got from you. When it fruits next year I'll compare pics. And the fruit.

I'm already planning to replace it with a Williams from Keith.

FHIA-17 ready to be bagged. It was a 12 hand bunch, but I cut the last two hands off. It's a long wait until the end of March.

It's such a good variety for yields. It's not unusual to be over 50 lbs.
