Default Winter Hyacinth - High Pleasure Yield

On New Year’s Day 2012 I posted the following picture, which I had photographed 2 days earlier:

Today I took this picture of the Winter Hyacinth it came from.

I am not sure, when the flowers opened outside, because I am never here during that time, but
that is supposed to happen late January to early February, beating Forsythia both in the early
bloom starting gate, as well as in duration of the ‘show time’.

I was walking past my neighbor's garden plot, and I noticed that his two Double-Mahoi 'nanners
are both blooming. They were both planted on the same day, and must be totally 'in sync' with
each other. He didn't know what they were but I found the tags that had been tossed on the
ground.

As I moved closer, the size of the blooms blew me away. The p-stems are only about 5 1/2 ft
high, and the small height makes the blooms seem even larger. They both appear between
20-22 in. I'll make a more accurate measurement with my tape measure tomorrow.
update - yup, it was right at 22 in.

This one is open a little more than the other one.

The picture doesn't really convey the size of these monsters. I'm still a 'noob' and have
not seen a bloom this large up close.

Here is a peek inside one.

Too bad neither one is a double. I guess that ought to happen next year. Mine is a little smaller
than these, but now I have an idea what to expect.

This is the first time I have seen any of my Red Abissinians (Ensete maurelli) bloom (9 total in my yard). While exciting to see, I am somewhat disappointed as this particular one has been in my yard for about 5 years and is by far the largest at around 15' to the very top. I hate to see it die off after the bloom. It is one of two that flank my front gate and is quite impressive during the summer months after all of the brown winter damaged leaves have been cleared off. Its going to look lopsided to have to replace this one with a new smaller one.

I was never really impressed with banana blooms, but my neighbor has two Double Mahoi's in bloom. I thought they were so nice I took some photos and had to share. In the first photo, the bloom further back had already dropped one petal exposing only 7 fingers on that hand. I figured that would be the typical number since I'm not familiar with this type. As I looked inside the petals that were still clinging on, I was surprised to see how packed these guys were. Both are loaded, and both had orange, curly-petal blooms. I don't know if this is the way these always come out, but I thought it looked nice. (yeah, I posted about these above, but they weren't open this far, and I had no idea they would come out this nice. I thought they were worthy of new pics)

I sure hope mine turns out like this.

This is the first one

Here are some of its hands

This is the 2nd plant

Here are hands from the 2nd one - update - I went back and counted 29 fingers on that hand.

My Raja Puri is flowering. There is some mystery as to whether this is really a Raja Puri or not. I've seen them as described as having some apple taste and being a ladyfinger shaped banana, and neither were true. The last bunch was very sweet and flavorful. But much more like a cavendish type. I know everything can differ quite a bit based on where it is grown though. If anyone who is more familiar with them can weigh in....

I don't think it is Raja Puri. The bloom shape and color is wrong -- looks exactly like Cavendish, which would explain the flavor. It shouldn't have the light colors in the bracts, nor should they roll as much. The Raja Puri I've tasted are very similar to Brazilian ("Hawaiian Apple") and not like Cavendish.

Here's what one should look like:

Thanks, I thought as much. So frustrating when someone sells you something that isn't what it is sold as and you have to wait 2 years to figure it out! It's certainly better tasting than the Williams, which is the only other cavendish I've gotten fruit from so far.

Rob, boy, I hear you -- at least with your warm weather you don't have to wait as long for a flower as some of us to figure out it was misidentified! About 25% of mine were misidentified. Often it's not the fault of the person you get the plant from because they received them misidentified, too.

If yours tastes significantly different that Williams, maybe it is something other than Cavendish with only A genes.

Joy Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas)

My very first banana bloom! Dwarf Namwah...I'm so excited! I planted this just under two years ago and finally.... This is my first time growing bananas.

Can anyone please tell me how quickly an inflorescence takes to open? Unfortunately I have to go away for a week and won't be here to photograph the big event so I'm hoping when I get back on the 15th it won't be too far along. Any ideas on length of time for this bud to open? I hope I don't miss too much. I have until Tuesday morning so I hope it does something before I go!

So, what's replacing those big boys? Pisang Klotek or something else? I'm hoping the PK you gave me last year will show up on this thread later this year.

The first bloom is very exciting, congrats! I don't think you'll miss much between now and Tuesday. If it's moving fast, the bloom may have "launched" by then, but I'd be surprised if any hands were showing.

Thanks! I think you missunderstood me...I am leaving on Tuesday for a week and won't be back until late night on the 14th so I will miss a week of growth. I was just trying to figure out what I will miss in this time frame and how long it takes for these blooms to open.
