![]() Today I put my new Musa Double plant into a huge pot, mulched it and found the sunniest spot in my SF Bay Area backyard. Hoping for good things. Will be looking for tips around the site on watering and fertilizer!

![]() I planted a pup of this Hawaiian banana that has never been given
a name as far as I, or the collector know. Although many 'nanners lose their color as they grow, the 2nd photo is from a banana with about 12 ft of p-stem, so I don't think these lose their color. Unless you know of some others, the only ones I know to exist are the isolated mat where it was found, some in the yard of the guy that collected a pup, and now mine. The gentleman that located it initially is familiar with the ones in the local botanical gardens, and has never seen it in any of them. The fruit is similar to those in the Iholena group, but more tapering on the end. The ones in my friends yard had p-stems that topped out at about 12-14 ft. If anyone has a guess for the ID, please let me know. Here are some links to photos of the mother plant on flickr. The collector calls it musa-2 (since it is un-named), and also has a slightly different one at his place that is partly variegated with what he thinks is an Iholena Lele or something similar that he calls musa-27. Mine shows none of the Lele traits, and should have good reddish color to it. musa-2 bunch musa-2 partly variegated with musa-27 traits musa-2 partly open leaf musa-2 on left, variegated with musa-27 on right If mine lives, ![]() |

![]() Yug, it is definitely in the Iholena subgroup. The leaf coloration and shape, as well as the bunch structure are the giveaways. I agree that the very lengthily-pointed fruits seem a bit extreme for known Hawaiian Iholena cultivars. It could be an unknown variety, lost in Hawaiian history and now recovered, or it could fall within the wide phenotypic variation known for, say, Iholena Lele. I'd contact Angela Kepler. She'd be interested and able to pin it down.

![]() I like how it has the green stipe down the center on the backside of the leaf. A R. Iholena's is pretty much just red. :^)

![]() Yeah, I like the unusual color pattern, too. If not for that, I may not have even noticed it much. I'd probably have thought it was an Iholena-something with skinny fruit.
