freezing temps and to many frosts all ways took my java to the ground. i think they maybe [for us] something you want to protect close to the ground. or as high up as possible. sorry to here.

I have always thought ice cream was kinda weak with the cold. I’m friends with the owner of Plantdelights and he has ice cream and it survives his 7b weather. Looks just like mine but has never fruited and never asked where he got it from ages ago.

You have sweetheart don’t you? Some pictures I have seen of it the stalks are very… green looking. Not sure if it’s just bad picture quality or what. But looks fluorescent. Looks cool.

yes i have sweetheart, right next to my ladyfingers. for me they don't grow as high as the ladyfingers. but they do look good together. hopefully this new way i am planting will get them to grow better. one problem is they don't grow as well in drier conditions as the ladyfingers. they are a little darker green than the ladyfingers. still very pretty.

this is a very early picture after i first planted them. front right raja puri, middle sweatheart and 3rd are ladyfingers.

They are all looking good! It was on a Tars site with the crazy green color. Wish we could grow the pink colored plant you have in the one picture. Areas under trees protected from frost we saw huge ones in Polk.

Hi, I personally was doing this, I was leaving only 4 leaves and then used the rest as mulch, the plant will grow a bit faster but it gived me less fruit.
Now I only cut leaves that are sick or drying, the more healthy leaves I leave on the tree the better,
also I learn that keeping the soil moist will make the plant grow the fastest.
FYI Im on Zone 11

the pink colored plant is actually dead leaves on a dwarf brazilian, lol.

i did actually have a chance to buy a banana with a pink p-stem at a flea market in hommosassa fl.. i didn't know what it was so i didn't buy it. never have figured out what it was, but i went back a few weeks later and they were all gone , and they had a large number of them which is why i didn't buy one.

One was a guy in SC, another Georgia, Florida. I just googled something in words of like my title. They had fruit on their plants. Could be a shock response too from all the trimming. For instance here agaves will all a sudden be shooting flower stalks in spring. It’s not normal for plants in random peoples yard to start blooming the same with these plants. In the desert or tropics it would be normal behavior of course.

Yes you are right, it could be a trigger for blooming. When we had hurricane Ian during all the wind we chopped off the top of two pstems, they ended up blooming a couple months later but the bunch was small and they didn't make it. I think for people who don't see blooms in their growing season maybe it works to get a small bunch at least.

When examining a theory it's good to start with what's easily provable and then figure out how to learn or prove any missing information.

The fruiting bunch starts it's journey from the underground stem so if a trigger were to happen, what's the estimated time frame from leaving the underground stem to developing the fruit, and finally to bud emergence.

Yep. I guess anyone curious can try it but looks ugly so I don’t want to trim mine up. Bummed enough I have lost some stems to the ground this winter already.

Good choice. It's counterproductive.

The photos below are of an experiment that partially stressed a plant to produce an early bud emergence while leaving all the leaves intact. The premature bud emergence had a negative effect on fruit size but because the plant had the necessary amount of leaves to properly mature the fruit their taste and quality were perfectly normal.

Thanks for showing this. What was the stress? I agree with leaving the leaves on, I have had multiple bunch failures from not enough leaves. Could someone stress the plant in other ways if they need a bud before freeze? Not that I would try it, I have almost year round growing season with occasional frost, but this year was pretty crappy. It seemed likely when I chopped the pstem during the hurricane it caused the emergence of the bud a couple months later as those pstems were not really the next in line if you know what I mean. This mat had about 8 pstems.

Off topic question but it’s my post so it won’t hurt. PR- what are your thoughts and experiences with whether bananas throw fruit faster with only one or two pups on the mat with the mother. Or it doesn’t matter? Now I know you’re in the tropics, some Florida peeps in here and my climate is different. But for example in the wild no one is there to remove pups and huge mats fruit sometimes multiple plants. In our yards, climates, and so many generations later or hybrids that makes a difference plus care.

Years ago I would have single mothers or 1-2 pups next to her and fruit like clock work. Others fruited with multiple pups of all sizes around them. I can’t bring myself to kill off any healthy pups to keep mats smaller. Plus my mats are all growing really deep and don’t want to disturb stuff just to remove pups of larger sizes. I do sell and trade some locally but mainly have certain mats I will mess with. So any theory behind keeping less pups for fruiting?

A lot of mine even protected this year that would have fruited melted to the ground. Weather has been crazy with cold temps then warm and back and forth. So that caused a lot of issues. Even being protected. Still have some that seem fine. Ice cream and Saba seem to be the weakest with this shift and don’t think they like 19 degrees temps or lower then 75 the next day.
