Which of these is better? Leaving the leave or Trimming
I have a banana that don't seem to grow taller for about 2 month. I decided to trim the leaves like this hoping its gonna help in height faster.
This is how it was: Banana Gallery - About Banana Leave Now i trim the leaves like this: Banana Gallery - About Banana Leave If it does not have any effect in height, is it a good practice to trim the leave or leave it with a lot of leaves? Please advice. Thanks |

You should never cut off green thriving leaves!

Re: Which of these is better? Leaving the leave or Trimming
lack of growth can be caused by dormancy (winter, colder temps), insufficient water, and insufficient fertilizer, root-bound plant, etc.

To Gambia: As you are located in Northwestern Africa, it should be tropical and probably you are in the rainy season. Pruning good leaves during the active growing season is never good. Presently, are you in a slightly warmer or colder rainy season? Your bananas appear to be actively growing in the photo, so I would not cut any but dead or apparently dying leaves. If you are in the full on tropics, don't cut the leaves. The leaves you've cut look healthy, and that means that they are actively photosynthesizing, or supplying food to the plant, so the loss would not be good. Pruning leaves on bananas does not speed growth. It does with other plants, but, to the best of my knowledge and experience, not so with bananas. If this time of year is your rainy or cool season, give them a break and just let them grow. Still, I would never suggest cutting healthy leaves off of any banana plant unless you are digging up the corm to store for winter, which in Gambia, I do not believe you experience a winter, and are thus less likely to be digging them up for the winter. What is your seasons, year-round climate, temperature ranges, and are you closer to the shore of the Atlantic Ocean or are you in a mountainous region? Really do need more information from you to further diagnose your banana problem. Good Luck! Gone Bananas. Mark Anthony |
