I’ve got a bit of a dilemma. I’ve got quite a few different banana varieties but I never marked any of them! Oops!
Would it be possible to properly identify which variety a plant is without having the fruit? Thanks in advance..... I apologize if I posted this thread in the wrong section!

Another question.... Does a black Thai plant have dark spots on the leaves when it’s young/small?

I like looking at pictures
what can it hurt to post some and see what people have to say. From what I understand, for positive ID on most plants, pictures of the flowers and fruit are needed. But if you post what varieties you have planted along with pics, some might be able to be matched up.

I'm growing Thai Black albeit from Tissue Culture so I'm still not 100% sure if it's the real deal. But mine has no spotting on the leaves. subsonicdrone just mentioned that the leaves curl on the sides and that's exactly what mine is doing. I thought I had gave it a bit too much fertilizer. Also the leaves are very dark. But I also haven't exposed it to direct sunlight yet.

The answer to the original question is maybe. If you know what varieties you have but not which is which, it will be easier. Dwarfs and talls should be fairly sortable as the plants grow. Reds should be easy to separate as a group. Rose leaves are fairly distinct as are Colorado Blanco. And so on. Trunk size is another sortable feature. No chance of mistaking a Fhia-18 for a Pisang Ceylon when looking at the trunks, for example.

So, you're saying you have that list of nearly 40 varieties growing and you didn't label any of them?

Yes believe it or not I really do have that many varieties! I even had a Florida Variegated that just died. Anyway, yes I really didn’t mark any of them! I do know what varieties of some of the plants are though! Some of them are pretty obvious what they are! Just like Bengal Tiger & AeAe! By the way I wrote up the list of varieties I have so I could tell people on this site when I joined last year.

Re: Identify a banana variety without having fruit?
The banana plant in the one picture I asked about is indeed an Orinoco! I was able to verify it b/c I looked closely at the plant outside and then looked up an older picture of the plant I bought last year. Both of them have a pinkish colored bottom part of the pseudo stem. So at least I’ve gotten a couple of plants identified! goteam:
