You should open up a small plant nursery and make some money

I've thought about it and it's been suggested many times but I always just end up giving plants away instead of selling them. Good idea though, Blake.

Thanks, Bob! I'm sure enjoying watching the fruits ripen. No worries, I'm sending the cutting shrubs out to you guys within the week...

Wink Re: "Amythest Beautyberry" shrub...

When you guys get them, plant them out in the garden and fertilize them right into late Fall. If they don't come back next Spring I'll set you up with more next season.

The truth is, it takes awhile to establish shrubs from cuttings and it can't be rushed. For those who have the room and the light, feel free to keep the shrubs indoors over winter and prune them over and over...they'll be bushy things by next Spring and you can plant them out then.

Whatever way you guys choose, I will replace anything that doesn't survive, so don't worry. I'll let you know the very day I mail them but I forgot about Labour Day Monday being a holiday which slows mail considerably. Best to wait until after the holiday before releasing plants into the mail.

Very soon though. I fertilized all the cuttings today and they are all thriving!

Sherry- what fertilizer and regimen are you using, so we can replicate it?

Howard...

I use an organic water-soluble formula called DNF (Dutch Nutrient Formula) for cuttings and seedlings. Bob tells me he can't get it in Jersey though, so I'm not sure if you can either.

I also use a bit of blood and bonemeal in the soil. I would feed with something high in nitrogen, to promote a lot of vigorous vegetative growth to get them going.

A crappy shot I took five minutes ago of some of the shrubs in my bedroom window. They are all doing great though...

Took these shots yesterday of both my shrubs ripening up beautifully...

These shots show the berries at various stages of the ripening process...

and another...

This shot is my favorite though...

I'm sending off the cutting shrubs this week for sure...just had a lot going on last week.

I'm thinking that if it's possible for you guys, keep them indoors for the Winter and put them out at the first of next Spring. I think on second thought when shrubs are raised from cuttings, they should spend the first Winter inside. However, if you guys want to chance it and they don't survive, remember I promise to replace them next season, so no worries.

They can successfully be kept in a partially sunny windowsill and be pruned all Winter long....they will be so full and bushy by Spring! I'm doing the same with a couple of mine.

Not quite, but nearly fully ripe...

In October the leaves will turn to a maroon purple color before they drop. The berries stay intact all Winter long...

Update on berry ladened cuttings in glass of water:

This pic says it all...

The fruits are actually ripening while the cutting is rooting in the water! What an easy to please plant this is! You can see more berries growing and ripening in the pic too.

Howard, anything from the post office yet?

Shearme, Penny, and Bob...

I am seriously sending your stuff off shortly. Things have just been a bit busy lately but I will mail them off this week for sure...
