OMG it's huge!

The berry quantity is astonishing...

They're just absolutely everwhere, with three times as many fruits as last season. Can't wait for them to turn purple...

Wink Re: "Amythest Beautyberry" shrub...

Thanks Pen!

All the cuttings I took are thriving and today I'm pruning them yet again and giving them some more starter formula. It's excellent in establishing and getting young roots going. They are coming along beautifully and I'm so excited to send them out soon.

Looks like I'll have plenty to be able to share with you too Penny, after I mail to the other guys. They'll take longer to get to the US, whereas you'll get yours within a few days of me mailing to you, being in Ontario like me.

I just can't believe how big it is this year. Check out the very first post in this thread and you can see it's three times as big this year! It has a 6 foot spread!!!

Don't give me any ideas, Bob!

Hey, wait a minute...

If they rooted, they'd be ladened with berries! I might try it Bob...just a couple!

I'll have an apartment full of beautyberry shrubs! Would like to keep one inside for fun over winter and see if the leaves still drop like they do outside. The berries should stay intact all Winter. We'll see...

Hey Sherry- Do the deer bother your beautyberry at all? I was thinking of putting them in my front yard as they're so pretty, but the deer practically live there. I might have to go into the back behind the fence, but that means finding a sunny spot, and those all seem to have bananas in them for some strange reason. BTW, I'll be pulling your toad lilies soon, so don't fret.

Also, Penny, try putting human hair clumps around plants to save them from the rabbits. Didn't work for me for deer, but was successful for rabbits. I get mine from Mom's beauty parlor. One word of caution- they do attract flies, but I'd rather have the flies and my plants than neither.

Talking Re: "Amythest Beautyberry" shrub...

We don't have too many deer in the city but I hear that beautyberry shrubs are appealing to them and one lady I know can't even keep them. They can be in part shade too, so don't think they need full sun and can't survive in anything else. They can.

No worries about the toad lilies, Howard. The truth is I'm overwhelmed with what I have now. Just when you get around to it, is cool with me, even if it's not until October.

Looking forward to sending your shrubs soon...

Hi, Howard,

When I googled last time, I found Amythest Beautyberry belong to category B plants, SELDOM severely damaged plants. Here is the link to the web site:

Lawn & Garden: Landscape Plants Rated by Deer Resistance

Just about every one of my category B plants has suffered FREQUENTLY SEVERE damages; some are dying and some never come back from last year's attacks. I personally adore the purple berries of the beautyberry shrubs because purple is one of my favorite colors; those shrubs are gorgeous if kept pruned.

I wouldn't suggest growing them in your front yard if you worry about deer problem as much as I do. In fact, I may try, in the future, growing them indoors - a wishful thinking.

Best of luck on growing Amythest Beautyberry to all of you!!!

Rae from Georgia

Gonna try the same thing, Rae!

I thought it would be cool to see if the leaves will drop indoors like they do outdoors in late Autumn. The leaves also turn purple-ish colored in early Fall, outside.

I took this shot today of my shrub...

It's just absolutely loaded with a sea of berries that are going to be full-grown shortly and ripening to purple...

I took some cuttings from a similar branch so I hope it roots and holds it's leaves and berries all Winter indoors. We'll see...

Good luck with yours, Rae.

Howard, didn't you tell me you always wanted a Hollyberry shrub?! Hand over that apology, banana boy!

Here's some beautyberry ladened cuttings I took to try inside for the Winter. The stems are now hardwood so it'll be interesting to see how they root...

Hiya Re: "Amythest Beautyberry" shrub...

That's better, Bob! I knew you'd see the error of your ways!

Your bush is ripening beautifully and I think it may be ready by Sunday, I'm hoping.

Now, back to Beautyberry...

I'm thinking that if these cuttings with fruits do root, I'll save them until Spring and then plant them out or give them away. I've got more little Callicarpa shrubs then I know what to do with at this point!

I noticed too that some of my berries outside are beginning to ripen and turn purple!!!

They're going to be a spectacular sight this year, that's for sure. Can't wait to show you guys...
