Re: What did you pot today (Bananas)
Actually, "tomorrow" loads more. I have more to dig up and I want to try to separate as many as possible. Abagnale has 6 pups!
I also made some cages to put over a couple, to fill with leaves. But I'm not sure that will be good for them, since it will freeze for a night or two, then temps go back up to 70s for several days. I don't want them rotting in the heat. |

Re: What did you pot today (Bananas)
Took forever to persuade this one out of the same container its mother was in. but i finally got it
stalewiak; how do your bananas handle the pots at such a large size? i am always worried mine would become root bound and upset. |

Re: What did you pot today (Bananas)
Just keeping the thread alive.....
This plant was hidden in the landscape and grew into the one gallon container... In fact I have a few of these that slipped through the cracks. The landscape container is 1 gallon. The plants in the background are tomatoes...chocolate cherry and Celebrity (throw at cars type)....fave. Here is the size of container I decided to use........before put it in the basement for seven months. I kept the container small ....so I will not overwater. .one gallon container one gallon container by Hostafarian, on Flickr Great size to move up/transplant to. I chose this size. 3 gal In spring I could step up the container again . Repotting a plant by Hostafarian, on Flickr . This size is too big. More space, more soil area. More chance to overwater the small rootball of this plant. This plant will not fill the container with roots from now till frost. Which is +- 40days The key for me is to have the plant be slightly root bound, because it will then be very hard to overwater. . . This is too big to up pot for the winter by Hostafarian, on Flickr This is a good look for your rootball in a container.....nice and loose. To some this photo appears that the roots are packed in this container......... But the roots are only on the circumference of the container. There is not one root in the center of this ball. Plant is a 5 year old plant which has since been stepped up to a larger container. Variable drip emitter is 24+ gph . Healthy roots by Hostafarian, on Flickr Last edited by cincinnana : 09-24-2016 at 07:34 AM. |

The dwarf looks to be 9 feet tall with pstem at 4.5 feet+-. Ladder is 6 feet. Indoors , I can do 12 footers comfortably and 15 footers tucked in the rafters. It gets tight. When the plant gets too tall I cut the leaf in half The link will direct you to my Flickr photo album for more plant madness. Last edited by cincinnana : 10-03-2016 at 04:02 AM. |

Re: What did you pot today (Bananas)
This past Wednesday (10/5/2016), I picked up a Truly Tiny, Dwarf Orinoco, and a Raja Puri. ... Left to right in picture. Also a Meyer lemon ( not pictured).
The TT stem is 12 in tall; the Dwarf Orinoco pstem is 32 in (all 4 ft over all); and the Raja pstem is 24 in (3ft over all). The 1 gal. pots of the Dwarf Orinoco & Raja were full of roots. So I believe these plants are close to 2 years old. I'll go back to this nursery next week for a couple more banana plants. |

Last month (September) is when my plants started winding down, turning yellow Right now daylight is 12on 12off with a loss of a few minutes of light each day. night temps 50+- day temps 65+- The average temps will drop off in a couple of weeks as well as light. Then I will have lots of yellow leaves. The plants in the background are Musa basjoo and they will not stop growing till the ground temp is in the 40s and a few heavy frosts. Even with that they will still push leaves till a hard freeze destroys the pstem to the ground. The ones on the skid are Bordelon, Dwarf red , Gran naine, Raja puri and Orinoco. |
