Help, What growing on my banana tree?
Hi There, Yesterday I discovered, that something strange is growing in the middle of the banana stem. (the stem is split) And I wonder if it is a leaf or a flower? should have grown from the top of the stem.
This is Musa Orinoco, in the cold season no leaves grew, and for this reason it has no leaves now. Recently I cut the last leaf that had started to dry. bananas suckers did not grow, the banana tree is 4 years old. So what is that thing?   |

That is a choke that has forced the center stem to push out the pstem side. Cut off the pstem at & above the push-out leaf.

Make the cut starting at center stem pushing out and cut downwards about 8 to 10 inches. Be careful not to cut the center stem. There are forum post showing how to do this and other chokes. ... The upper part of the pstem has no leaves so there is little benefit for it to remain. However just leave it for a little while. .... You could split it open too just to see what was going on inside the stalk. It's a good chance to learn. .... The plant being 4 years old, I really doubt that is the original pstem, ... may be 2nd or 3rd stem.

For me it usually happens under stressed growing conditions or damage to the pstem from me carrying it around. Do what the other fellas have suggested and you will be fine and the plant will sort itself out in a few weeks.
