| Banana Seed Germination Forum As one of the toughest seeds in the plant kingdom to figure out the keys to germination success with, this is a forum with banana seed germination tips. Please entitle posts like "Musa balbisiana," or "Musa cheesmani," etc. People would then post a reply under that heading, sharing their germination successes (and failures), what materials and methods they used, germination percentage, etc. |

I'm going to try a few ways to germinate the seeds and I'll update this thread.
I have some in a nice Humidity Dome with a thermostat controlled heat mat & LED grow light once they germinate. I also have several outside to take in the natural heat & humidity (but no direct sun) under my porch. For these I'm using 50/50 Peat Moss / Perlite mix I'll also try just planting some places around the yard to see if the all-natural method works as well. ![]() ![]() Thank you PRGiants for acquiring the seeds! ![]() I'm super stoked... Let's Go! ![]()

After 5 weeks and about 40 seeds planted in different spots (indoor/outdoor/in-ground)... I was beginning to lose hope...but I finally got my first seedling!
This is also literally a miracle seedling... This was one of the ones I kept outside in small starter pots. The eye of Cat 1 / Tropical Storm Nicholas went through my area. Several of my things were tossed across my lawn due to the heavy winds including some of my potted bananas... but this little guy miraculously stayed put and sprouted the next day!!!! WHAT!?! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

1 Week later...
![]() It put out its first leaf... and it's definitely striped! I don't want to call it a variegated sport just yet... but looks very promising ![]() ![]() ![]()

Here is the seedling now
I've only been letting it get early morning sun then stay in the shade. I think I'm going to move it inside under the grow light The leaves coming out are green but it's definitely variegated ![]() ![]() ![]()

Unfortunately the original seedling growing in the dome died.
Still need to experiment on the correct amount of heat/humidity/light for it. I've been attempting to germinate more outside with natural heat/humidity. I've been experimenting with great success. Germination rate on 50/50 Peat Moss/Perlite has been excellent. With 30% potting soil germination rate is a lot lower. I've only had 1 germinate on 100% potting soil so far. Some are green and some show signs of variegation. ![]() ![]()

Seeing a few with differing and beautiful variegation traits.
The one on the left is the only one (so far) with very prominent dark green /w bright yellow variegation. ![]() This one is mostly a faded yellow color with green streaks. Absolutely gorgeous. (Yes it's 2 plants together I double seeded some and both germinated) ![]() This has been my most exciting project so far. ![]() ![]()

That's beautiful
Does your plant have some white variegation on the younger leaves or is it just the picture? I have one that has white variegation but it is very weak understandably. It's only put out 2 leaves but the first leaf died off already. We'll see how it does ![]()

Wanted to share some pictures before I re-pot these and also wanted to share some of my observations.
I've put the seedlings in 3 categories
![]() ![]() 3 Weak Ones growing by themselves and another 2 growing next to 'Green Ones' ![]() And no the 'Weak Ones' growing next to the 'Green Ones' are not simply being deprived. Here is a 'Green One' & 'Beautiful One' growing together. ![]() 'Green Ones' on the left and 'Beautiful Ones' on the right ![]()

It was quite a bit of work but I've re-potted them all now.
Many had a good root system going. It was a pain carefully separating the ones growing in pairs. I ended up having 9 Variegated 'Beautiful Ones' and 10 'Green Ones' + 3 Smaller green seedlings. ![]()

Did you have more luck with them outside under patio or in humidity dome? Trying to find some seeds and want to give it a shot.

OMG! I just love Acuminata Colla Variegated. Does anyone on here know where to get some? I am a little frightened about trying from seed as I had no luck the first couple of times. But I am willing to try. But I would prefer a pup.
