You're farther north than I am here in Illinois...was this grown in a pot and stored inside for winter or was it left in the ground. I thought Orinocos would freeze out if left in the ground in the north. Congrats on a banana ripening in Iowa. How long did it take for this to produce?

These are planted in the garden in mid May and dug and put in the basement in mid to late Oct. Some are stored bare root, if they were in the ground. If in a pot stored in the pot. I have third year sometimes second year plants that bloom, always the one's in the ground. Here's a pic of last years dig, 4 of these are the one's that bloomed this year.

This is a photo of the Orinoco that I have to dig. I put it on a tarp and dragged it to the basement. Very heavy. Last year it was in a pot and this year planted it in the ground. It got very tall and big. I repotted, after digging, it for the basement this year and thought I would leave it potted for next year, thought it would be easier to get in for winter. But from what you are saying, if I want it to flower (isn't that what we all want?) it would do best if replanted in the ground next year. Are the ones that flowered for you that were in the ground older than your potted ones? Glad to hear it will eventually flower in the north.

The ones in pots are usually pups, but a few will be going on their 3rd season next spring. They will go in the ground next spring.

Next year will be it's 3rd year, so hopefully a flower....the Orinoco was planted by the small pond in the backyard to help shade the pond, hopefully to help with the algae in the pond (shade). It did a great job there, and got very tall with big leaves. A great banana plant.[IMG]

Hey Iowa, Was that really ripe like that? My orinocos are still quite hard and starchy at that color. They all need to be almost completely black to be soft, sweet and ripe enough to eat like that. Are you sure it's an orinoco? Very cool if it's ripening that early. My only Orinoco to not fruit yet is a dwarf.
Maybe I should dig them up and replant them every year :-) Would be odd to do here in Florida though :-D

This was eatable, a little tough in the middle. Cut in half and take a little out of the middle and it was OK. I let the others ripen more. These had a couple of weeks of 40 and 50 degree nights before I cut them off and bought them in. Took about 3 more weeks to ripen. Had 1 hand that was eatable, for here that's a bumper crop.
