Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas)
The Banana plant is about 14 ft tall over all. Height to flower is about 10 feet.
Here's the same banana with a bit of garden . Thanks! Last edited by Caline : 01-18-2017 at 04:46 PM. Reason: code dust |

Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas)
Hello y'all,
I just read on a garden website that the flower should be cut off after fruit is set so it doesn't draw energy away from the fruit. There are a few small hands and the flower and stem continue stretching out. Should I cut off the flower? or leave it? Thank you. |

Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas)
It makes very little difference, if any in the fruit, but may make some small difference in weight if tipping is a problem. Be sure there is at least a foot of stem between the last bananas and the flower, otherwise the stem rots back and could kill your bananas.

Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas)
I think this practice, which makes sense on the surface, doesn't actually work and isn't necessary. A common commercial practice to cut the rachis and flower bud off immediately below one or more fingers. Because the fingers are still growing, drawing water and nutrients, the rachis ("stem") remains alive and does not rot. If you cut the rachis above the flower, but leave a foot-long "tail" as you see sometimes suggested, that "tail" portion of the rachis will die because nothing is left to draw nutrients through it, actually encouraging rot. At least that's been my experience.

Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas)
I do not have a lot of practical experience with this subject at present so I wanted to help based mostly on what others have said. I know I cut the bloom on my first bunch after just a few inches and it all turned out alright, but waited on my next two and they are both dying off, although most likely from some other cause yet to be determined ( See here: new issue. bananas turning black & dying HELP ) My last bunch I have left, I have not cut the bloom at all.
Your hypothesis makes sense to me. Especially since the commercial growers don't wait to cut...Given the time and enough banana plants, I will experiment and find out some stuff from experience. I have 11 varieties, so all I need to do now is water, fertilize and wait.

Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas)
I don't have 12 inches between the flower and the last bananas. I am just going to leave the flower alone. This is a Lady Finger.

Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas)
Only the 2nd Double Mahoi I've had that has done any doubling. Unfortunately just the male bud which doesn't make more fruit. Cool looking though.
Gran Nain Sumatrana Cross, as it's known anyway. Will be interesting to see if these are edible at all. Last edited by robguz24 : 07-03-2017 at 01:33 PM. |

Looks like Orinoco to me. When the fingers get bigger, it will be easier to tell.

Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas)
Hello Banana grower friends,
I'm posting a new update picture of the bananas today. I am inexperienced and need your kind input. Do you see any yellow coloring? Are they ripening? What do you think? Last edited by Caline : 02-17-2017 at 02:01 PM. Reason: pic |

Nowhere near ripe. They need to fill out a lot more. Be patient.
