Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas)
The color pattern on the bracts of this variety is so unusual. Really neat.

And it's considered to be one of the best among the first-class eating bananas. It's two pseudostems, both first ratoon and it is unusual to have them pointing in the same direction.

Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas)
Blue Java (from Rmplmnz - thank you!).
These have been so interesting to watch develop. They started out bright green under the bracts and have turned more blue each day as they have developed. We planted this pup in our sugar sand soil and have been adding used mulch from the area where our chickens are put up each night, along with a small amount of oak ash. |

Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas)
Iholena Kapua, 11 months to flower.
Unnamed Iholena that also exists on Oahu, possibly elsewhere. Found in a state park in Waimea, Big Island. We call it "Nani" which means beautiful. Beautiful pattern on the underside of new leaves, possibly had cucumber mosaic virus. Long peduncled Iholena variant. Plant looks similar, yet distinct from Kapua. Only 8 months to flower. |

Re: What's blooming in your garden? (bananas)
If you're growing in the subtropics, this should be in your collection. Plant to harvest in less than a year with huge bunches of great fruit, certainly one of my favorites. Expecting this bloom to be in the 80 lb. range.
With so many great members growing this cultivar there should be enough pups for everyone this year. A special thanks to the University of Florida for the work they did with this Majestic Musa. Cocos & Highgate blooming. 2 huge 3640, that will soon appear small after their sister drops her load in a few days.
