Pisang Klotek, 10' of p-stem. First time with this variety for me. Pretty big bud. I hope winter is kind to it.

Thanks for the plant Mitchel!

Funny you posted this. Mitchel and I were talking today about the height of when my 2 Pisang Klotek at 8.5' might flower. Your plant must have been listening to us. This looks promising for me in so cal area for next year.

Awesome Mark!
Also, I just finished building the Hot houses for my banana's to overwinter this year, a lot of work, I will post pics this weekend after my Agribon gets here on Wednesday. If you need the info let me know I can PM it to you. Good luck with the Klotek bud.

Thanks.

Yes, the flag leaf is twisted and split -- it seems to be a common symptom of something in my yard. I think it has to do with slow boron uptake. I suspect it has something to do with my heavy clay soil. Looking around the neighborhood, whatever it is, it seems pretty common in my area, especially when you push the fertilizer.

Bought this as "Thai Dessert" banana here on Hawaii Island. Not sure what the proper name is. The same person sold me Sucrier aka Pisang Mas aka Kluay Khai. The plant itself looks very similar but Sucrier is known for heavily leaning and this one does not. I have had the fruit once, and remember that it was a bit different than Sucrier. They both took over 3 years to fruit for the first time. Maybe 8' of p-stem.

Rob, my reaction was, that's another Sucrier when I saw the pictures. If not, it certainly seems like it has to be something with an AA genome.

Yeah, I'm sure it is AA. Other than the not leaning, it doesn't have quite as much brown on the p-stem and petioles as the Sucrier. Sucrier was one of my faster bananas flower to fruit, so hopefully in 3 months I'll be able to taste the difference, if any. I think the guy who sold it to me has also called it Kluay Khai, but I've also seen that as just another name for Sucrier.

My first bloom ever! I'm so stoked! It's on my unknown plant that might be Dwarf Brazilian. The bud is massive, 21 inches so far, and it hasn't even fully emerged yet. I planted it around 16 months ago in July of 2011, and it only has about 5 feet of p-stem. Pretty short, but it's a bud nonetheless, and a big one. More pics coming soon!

Now we'll finally get to identify it!

Congrats Andreas. At that height, could also be Rajapuri, a close relative to Dwarf Brazilian.

Newest additions:

"Misi Luki Awak" from Jon, about 10' of p-stem:
[IMG][/IMG]

Dwarf Namwah, 3rd bud of the year (4th is only a few days behind); about 8' of p-stem on a plant that is thick! More than 3' in circumference at the base. There's nothing in the photo for scale, but this bud is a monster.

Rose update. This photo was from about a week ago. It ended up with 9 hands of cute, little fingers.
[IMG][/IMG]

Pisang Klotek update. This photo was from a few days ago, but it's going to end up with at least 10 hands. I think I can count that many already, but they are packed so tightly that it is hard to tell.

Update on my first bloom. Turns out it's a Raja Puri, not an Ice Cream as it was labeled as.

Ice Cream is turning out to be a very illusive variety. Great pics! Is it a good time of year for the bloom to start? Meaning... will it develop well in cooler time of year?

It's probably the worst time of year for a banana to bloom, growing conditions now are marginal at best, and it will only get colder over the next few weeks to month. Not much will happen over the winter, but if there's no frost this year, the bananas should fill out and mature eventually during the spring or summer. Their flavor might be affected by the cold though.

EDIT: Just looked at the forecast, and it looks like I'm in for some nice warm weather in early December!

Think summer to fall, not spring, for ripe fruit. I doubt the flavor will be affected much, but the size and texture might. Some varieties would outright fail over winter (bloom would die), but Rajapuri should do fine.
