4 weeks ago, I saw what I thought was a weed, but turned out to be a new slender pup. The following week, this was followed by a green slit in the blackened original sheath that turned out to be the original plant pushing out some growth. Another week after that, there was another pup growing. This was taken over a week ago. The newest pup has actually leafed out some.

Original plant is in the middle back, first pup is the one in the back on the right, newest pup is in the front.
Here is the brother of the M. Tomoc pictured above:

The height of the base of the newest leaf petiole is 26" from the top of the soil. The corm is buried 12" below the top of the soil.

I am always hopeful that I can get anything to grow here. I look at it as, Won't know until I try. They said that bananas won't grow in the desert, but with some modifications to environment, prayers and some luck, they seem to be able to grow here. Next we will see if they fruit. I noticed that Gadget has some in fruit down in Tempe, so I am encouraged.
Yes, both the Rainbow Eucalyptus and Yellow mangosteen will be kept indoors - at least at night. If the temps are warm enough, they will get some outside time weather permitting.

If this Rainbow gets to be a size where it has to be outside, I might make some cuttings and root them, then sell the tree.

Question Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?

I have a Big skylight on my 3rd floor. Iam thinking my brugs, and cactus, and kalanchloe(sp) should go up there.

Some members of the kalanchoe family are tall and ornamental and until they bloom have only a slight resemblance to the scallop-leaf variety sold as indoor plants. I think you should get some of those!

I planted up these SDCs because they were still in the ground and it'll get too cold for them soon. They have been subjected to one 34F frost (they were covered with sheets) and a few other upper 30 and 40F temps. Took them all just fine. The 2 in the one container were actually pups of the biggest one. I wasn't on top of the bananas this summer and i let the pups stay attached too long, but oh well. Next summer they'll get divided. I'm going to put in a huge banana patch next summer and i'll have at least 20 corms to start with! Its going to be a jungle or so i hope. Another thing was that this summer had very few 90F+ days...highest was 94F. Also was VERY dry in July/Aug/Sept...

I have basjoos and sikks too... One of my basjoos is around 7ft right now, with a couple of giant pups attached (i really was slacking this year!). So there *should* be a 10ft or better banana next year.

I plant them out in late April if the weather looks decent. I'm guessing it was around the 20th. They really don't do much for the first month or so.

For winter they'll just sit in the extra bedroom until it gets really cold and then get moved into the kitchen or where ever its a little warmer. They just sit and really don't do anything all winter. I water them maybe a few times all winter once they come in the house. In some ways SDCs work really good up here in Wisconsin, plus they look better then the basjoos.

I gave all mine a shave and a haircut today to bring indoors, to bushy to fit in the room down stairs, equipped with four double florescent light fixtures armed with phillips red and blue spectrum plant bulbs to try and maintain slow growth overwinter, I have ye ol bucket of Dwarf Cavs. that I'm trying to get to flower, two gran nain, two basjoo-new this summer, two maurelli-new, a lasiocarpa "tough as nails" new, and my poor abused "by grasshoppers and children" young citrus trees, and a siam ruby also new this summer. Hoping to keep it in the sixtyfive seventyfive degree range and watch watering. I'm going to post pics that momma took as soon as I get them all resized and sorted out, SHE took 200 hundred pics today on the digital, confusing me to no end as I'm techno. challenged but I'm work'in on it.

Hey Frank, you planted outdoors this year in late April? I live in MKE WI - prolly same zone or more (Z5 here) & we had a frost warning night of May 28. Unusual here for that time. I already planted a nanna tree inground a week before & wrapped it up good that night. The leaves died & it looked dead, but it grew new leaves & did well all summer.
Did your trees suffer or did you protect them?
How did yours do that night?? I just happened to write that day on my calendar. May 28 is very late for frost here...I usually have my garden planted by late April.
Hey, Kent & Howard, you guys are just too funny! Yes, I caught that too! LOL

Yesterday I planted a Cardaba, Hua Moa, and the unknown "California Hardy" from Lodi, CA in the ground. I bought these earlier in the year and they were in my greenhouse and were getting big for their pots. It's a bit late to be planting outside here, getting into the upper 40s at night, but it is nice during the day and I decided to make the move as I've got to reserve space in my greenhouse for higher priority plants (Ae Ae, papaya, miracle fruit, pineapple, some tomatoes, basil, and some other small plants.

sold in Thailand.

Wolfe, do you have a greenhouse or do you just bring your bananas into your house there in zone 6? I'd like to see a photo of your banana (even if it's one posted by the seller). Is it supposed to produce edible fruit?
