Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
I haven't quite finished yet, but I potted everything from my San Diego trip:
Red and White Iholena, Belle and Williams from Matt in SD - thanks Matt! Then, Orinoco, Praying Hands, Gran Nain and Mysore - plus some Pitayas -all from Sunfish - Thanks Tony! Then, FHIA-2, FHIA-17, FHIA-23, SH3640 from Pitangdiego - thanks Jon! Then Ae Ae from CaGary - Thanks Gary! Planted a Puya Alpestris the other day too. Man, those things are dangerous! Yesterday another box arrived with Cal Gold, Goldfinger and Mysore from Microfarmer - thanks Jeff! Still have to go buy more pots and soil. Still have another dozen or so coming! Yikes!!! (Loving it!!) Then in my spare time I am trying to germinate several hundred banana seeds that have been accumulating over the past few months. When I finish those, I can start on my tropical and other plant seeds (only about 15,000 seeds, although a bunch are poppy seeds) Also got the TC lab set-up finally, so I will be practicing in my spare time this winter - Wahoo!!! Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
MsKitty, I have some started - a Chinese Blue Chungii Bamboo. It got a little toasted at first, but is making a comeback. I should have some for you this spring. I forgot to mention all of the bamboo I planted. Here is what I have growing now: Blue Chungii, Common Bamboo, Buddha Belly-Kimmea, Regular Buddha Belly Ventricosa, Thai Nodding, Black Lako, Golden Hawaiian, Oldhami and one other NOID. And of course, there is more on the way....

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
Thanks for the kind words The shorter bushy one is an unknown multplex that was given to me, and the other is Bambusa Viridi Flavus, or something like that. I know I butchered the name, but I'm not at home and don't have it memorized.

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
Potted up my latest Ae Ae acquisition. I now have two, with my biggest about 6' tall from the soil line (12' tall overall). I'm addicted to them and hope to have a at least 5 mother plants some day, if possible.

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
I actually planted this a couple of months ago. There were two of them that were of this variety - M. Tomoc. Both were two foot long sword pups. The other is growing really good, but this one just kept getting black and mushy until it was just 6" tall and 3/4' diameter of black sheath, although I was spraying it with fungicide twice a week.
4 weeks ago, I saw what I thought was a weed, but turned out to be a new slender pup. The following week, this was followed by a green slit in the blackened original sheath that turned out to be the original plant pushing out some growth. Another week after that, there was another pup growing. This was taken over a week ago. The newest pup has actually leafed out some. Original plant is in the middle back, first pup is the one in the back on the right, newest pup is in the front. Last edited by chong : 09-21-2008 at 04:52 AM. Reason: Added missing description. |

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
Hello Kev,
According to Jon (Pitangadiego) M. Tomoc is similar to M. Lacatan, but it only grows to around 6' to 8' (1.8M to 2.4M) at his farm. As with the Lacatan, it is also from the Philippines. Here's a link to his website. Look under "Tomoc": ENCANTO FARMS Chong |

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
Removed my Siam Ruby pups yesterday and potted them. Today they still look good, and Momma looks OK too. Whew, this was my first pup removal surgery. Next is my lasciocarpus.

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
Well, awhile back I picked up a container from Home Cheapo, it had 3 MySore Nanas in it, they are about 3' tall, so took those out of the container and cut them apart, and planted them in the ground,, hope they survive!!! Yes each one had a good piece of root(?) on it, and one even is showing a pup commming up outa the root by it! So we shall see!!! ohyes, give them a good shower of Miracle Grow this evening, my others seem to like that stuff too... walt
