Re: Musa cheesmani seed up after 2.5 years

They didn't like this past winter. It got down to 60 degrees inside and they all died. Bananas hate my place. Strelitzia does a lot better.

Musa cheesmani seed up after 2.5 years

Planted seeds Musa cheesmani Aug 2013, one just germinated. Seed tray has gone dry many times, was kept on heating pad, neglected, then a while ago I put some palm seeds in with it and rewatered.

I...

Re: Ensete Glaucum - first try sowing banana

Planted seeds of this species on Oct 18th of last year - long enough ago that I forget what I did, although probably I soaked them for a day or two. They are definitely in a container of about 2...

Re: Travellers Palm - Germination

Ravenala, like a lot of other tropicals, can take a short, medium, or long time to germinate. So whatever you do don't toss the seeds.

Size is more manageable than you think. They can survive...

Long Germination, Ensete

Just had a couple of Ensete glaucum come up last month after being planted in Nov 07. Also several E. ventricosum planted in Dec 07 (also had germination on the ventricosum a month after planting,...

Re: Germination after 1 yr or more

I always inspect old batches. If the seed crumbles between your fingers, that's what Sherlock called a 'clue'. Otherwise I dampen the soil and give them another shot. In the wild they go through...

Re: Spider Mites

A very cheap method is to dilute some detergent or liquid soap in water, spray on all surfaces of plant. Eliminates surface tension of water, overcoming waterproof covering of bugs' respiratory...

Re: Adenium (desert rose)

I haven't taken cuttings of this particular species. Based on experience with other cacti/succulents:

Let the cuttings dry at least a couple of days. A few days extra likely won't hurt.

It's more...

Re: Time to throw in the towel?

I've had tropical seeds germinate a year or more after planting. If they haven't rotted and they aren't in the way, I would keep them around. It may be that various cycles of cooling/heating,...

Re: Spider Mites

If I were really an expert I'd know the name of a bug that munches them. Currently, I walk in darkness. Soap is my only friend.

Re: Spider Mites

Soap has no effect on exoskeleton of living arthropods. The outer surface of arthropods' respiratory systems is hydrophobic - taking advantage of surface tension of plain water to keep it out of...

Re: Banana is flowering in basement!

Congratulations. This reinforces my observation (when dealing with living things) that the only "experts" are the organisms themselves, and the rest of us are merely observers - more or less...

Re: Welcome Myself

I use a mix of sand and commercial potting soil, no preference. Had about 30% germination in two weeks in early September, so temp probably about 80-90F. After the initial burst, nothing. I am...

Re: Welcome Myself

I am not digital at this time, so no photos yet. Medium is a mix of sand and whatever potting soil is at hand, more or less 50/50. Temperature is hot in summer, coolish in winter. They germinate...

Re: Ensete Ventricosum Seed Germination

Received E. ventricosum seeds 1 month ago. The seeds were light and floated on water, which I have been told is a bad sign; but after alternate soaking and drying, initial germination has been very...

Re: Rooting plants from cuttings . . .

I will chime in.

The number of methods also rises according to the variety of plants. Rooting succulents such as cacti and aloes is totally different because the plant itself stores water in the...

Re: Ensete Superbum & Kluay Pa

Germinated some Ensete superbum a few months ago. Took 2-3 weeks, back when it was very hot, about 25% germination at that time, still waiting for the rest.

Re: Bought a Strelitzia Reginae Bird of Paradise today for a dollar.

This is why I have learned to distrust "expert" advice. The "expert" is not the one putting out the bloom, the plant is. Presumably the plant knows best. Great bargain.

Re: My 'two directions' with 'Palm Majesty' Ravenea rivularis

You say that the top is putting out fronds like crazy, and the middle and bottom fronds are developing brown tips and dying. This is typical of all palms. Sooner or later, the lower leaves drop...

I also have a couple of seedlings, 1st one after 3 weeks. They spent the first few weeks at room temp, so I expect more now that I've got them on heatmat.

If white bird of paradise is Strelitzia nicolai, I've germinated them a couple of times. It can take anywhere from six weeks to a year or more.
