Shedding Leaves from the Pseudostem

My Cavendish type bananas are starting to shed leaves off the pseudostem. I'm not talking about the typical leaf drop, but where the pseudostem looses considerable mass and the new leaves are...

Re: Musa itinerans var. xishuangbannensis!!!

Harvey: I contacted Markku long ago. He's not in position to share the material he donated for non-research purposes. He didn't have any other suggestions.

Musa itinerans var. xishuangbannensis!!!

Really. After all this time, we still don't have a source for this banana. I worked my tail off for 4 years with TianZi to get something done. I did receive 4 pathetic looking corms that rotted away...

Fruiting w/ and wo/ leaves - California Gold

I've had the opportunity to observe fruit development on California Gold w/ and wo/ leaves. The wo/ leaves pseudostem bloomed immediately after the nasty freeze at the beginning of February. So for...

Re: How to handle the heat

I'm two hours east of Dallas. We've been hammering past 100 for the past two months. I water 5 times a week. Tons of compost. Most of my bananas just love it. Saba, Black Balbisiana, Brazilian & Cali...

Re: Cali Gold Clump with multiple Fruiting Pseudostems

I received a large sucker from one of our fellow posters two falls back. I put heat lamps on the pseudostems this past winter to help on the coldest nights. Lost all the leaves, but the pseudostems...

Cali Gold Clump with multiple Fruiting Pseudostems

Here's my California Gold Clump w/ fruit on a stump and a flag leaf on the big one. Not bad fruiting results for dealing with a period of 4 consecutive days below freezing in February. Does this help...

Re: What do you recommend, Dwarf or regular Brazilian

I live in Zone 8A (2 hours due east of Dallas). I've had Dwarf Brazilians for 4 years. Two of those years were pretty nasty. Last year we stayed below freezing for 4-5 days straight. Ultimate lows in...

Re: Dwarf Brazilian

It's dark, so I don't have a picture, but I'm pretty impressed with my ole Dwarf Brazilian clump. The nasty winter killed everything to the ground, but now, I have 7 plants coming up. The tallest has...

Is this a good sign: California Gold

I finally got my first bloom showing up on my California Gold clump. Obviously, no leaves are left after the winter, but the other pups in the clump are pushing out leaves. I suppose they will be...

Why exactly did you have to cut all the leaves off the bananas?

Re: Musa itinerans var. xishuangbannensis

BB73: That does not appears to be Musa itinerans var xishuangbannensis. That appears to be M. yunnanensis. The white wax in the petioles identifies this as a mistake made by alot of buyers selling...

Musa itinerans var. xishuangbannensis

For the love of everything good on this planet. Has anyone been able to acquire one of these. I tried and tried with TianZi for 4 years without success. Absolute failure. Somebody has to have one of...

California Gold and "Dwarf" Brazilian

California Gold mat in the foreground (3 pseudostems) and Dwarf Brazilian (debatably dwarf) in the background. I figured placing the Cali. Gold here next to the window and against the house would...

Re: How many leaves? - California Gold

I have not counted the # of days of median over 77. I'd guess this thing has had close to 30 leaves now. It's sending one up every 6 days. Sounds like we're getting close.

I received the pup from...

My California Gold I received from Benny is strong. It's 5 feet in height and supporting 18 leaves and 2 vigorous pups. When does this thing flower?

Re: Black balbisiana

I had them in a shaded green house over the winter. Only the new growth shows the good black coloration. It was probably 5-6' when I put it out in April. Saba was probably 4-5'.

Bingo. That's what I'm observing.

Another thing, the flower produces a good bit of super sweet nectar.

Musella Craziness

Maybe all of you have experienced this, and I've just not kept up; but I'm observing some crazy stuff with my flowering Musella:

1. Pups are emerging interior to the old leaf bases.
2. There's a...
