Musa Sikkimensis mature height
I just started growing Musa Sikkimensis from seed this year. What is the real mature height of this type? How much stem? Overall height? What about compared to Basjoo or Orinoco? Does it continue grow in the winter along the gulf coast, like Basjoo and Orinoco?
Any comparison pictures are welcome! |

2,000 views and no replies? Yes, I realize there is tons of info on the web, but its ALL over the place for this variety. I want some real deal info on these guys. I'm sure all these other hits are looking for this same info too.

For me on the chilly northern California coast sikkimensis(agri-starts clone) started growing in spring before M.basjoo, but I never saw it's ultimate height. It would probably get taller with a filtered shade canopy above it than in full sun in more tropical climates like yours.

I have one that I've grown from seed. It's only 2 feet tall right now. Mine is in mainly full sun with a little filtered light real late. I haven't been overly impressed with this banana's speed with all the heat it's getting. The leaves are burning a bit with the sun. I'm wondering if this guy needs cooler temps overall.

Here are a few pieces of information I’ve gleaned from local growers, forum users, and my personal experiences. I will return to this thread with future updates. Please feel free to comment…
My experience: • Germination is very easy • Sikkimensis is not vigorous • Seemed to like our mild winters and growth was steady • Growth seemed to slow in our high heat and humidty Other notes (At maturity AND in a subtropical climate): • Taller than Basjoo • Wider and slightly longer leafs than Basjoo • Marginally more leaf hardy than Basjoo • Retains at least as much pseudo stem as the Basjoo • Sikkimensis returns earlier in the season than Basjoo Since it’s less vigorous, this is a weaker choice in extreme cold compared to the Basjoo. The Basjoo simply has a vigor that Sikkimensis lacks. However, in milder subtropical areas, this is a comparable choice and is essentially hardier at maturity. |
