Cold Re: What would be best for winterizing banana plants with bananas growing?

I'm not sure if this helps you in your climate, but I am in the SF Bay Area, and we occasionally get weather in the winter that threatens or kills bananas, and certainly could freeze its fruit. One...

Re: The cold hardy list

This list looks like one that Joe Real of Northern California posted to the California Rare Fruit Growers site about ten years ago, but I am not positive it is the exact same list.

Joy Re: The cold hardy list

My California Gold's first full-sized bananas. Previous ones were only about 4 inches long, probably because they bloomed in November rather than May.3677

Re: 9 months minimum?, flower to mature fruit?

Hi, Mark. I got into growing bananas about three years ago, so a lot of my stuff is still young. I have personally had California Gold and Dwarf Orin. flower, and I think Kandrian will flower in a...

Re: what are your creative cheap and resourceful sources for big pots?

I convert plastic wheeled garbage cans into pretty nice-looking HUGE containers. I like the 48-gallon and 96-gallon sizes. I spray-paint them with metallic paint (bronze and copper) and then plant...

Re: 9 months minimum?, flower to mature fruit?

MV8R, since it gets into the teens, you might consider using big containers and putting them on wheels, because you might have to pull them in on your coldest nights.

Re: 9 months minimum?, flower to mature fruit?

I'm in San Jose, CA. We get a few nights a year in the 20s. I wrote an article for our California Rare Fruit Growers newsletter about Veinte Cohol two years ago, after interviewing one of the...

Re: up the creek with half a paddle

I use 45-gallon and 95-gallon wheeled trashcans, painted with hammer-finished gold and copper paint to look less trashcan-like. In really bad cold freezes, I either pull them inside (which gets to...

Re: Tips and tricks for bananas to flower in containers

You had asked what to do to get them to flower. I just got my first flower here in San Jose after two years. One of the things that I did a little differently this year was that starting in very...

Re: 25 gallon Nursery pots.

Oh, I see. That sounds like a great idea for first-floor gardening. I will have to remember that one. Right now, I am growing the "mother" plants on a second-floor balcony, and then I plant out...

Joy Re: 25 gallon Nursery pots.

So Abnshrek, how do you make sure that when the bananas start getting big, that the whole plant doesn't tip over? I would think that might be a problem with a smaller container, when the banana...

Re: 25 gallon Nursery pots.

I have been using Rubbermaid and Toter wheeled trash cans. I usually paint them to look better, but the green Toter cans look pretty good without paint. The advantages are that you can get 45-95...

California Gold fruiting after TWO years!

After two years, the California Gold that my husband bought for me for our anniversary two years ago put out a flag leaf on the 10th, then promptly put out the flower bud less than a week later! It...

Re: Smart Pots for Banana

I have mine growing in 45-gallon, wheeled trash cans. I painted the trash cans gold and copper, so they look nicer, and grow plants down the side to cover up the "Rubbermaid" logos. I also sawed...

Re: Protecting in-ground banana plants from cold?

I agree with the Roseville poster that here in California, it's usually the fact that we get cold, wet rain in this part of California, and that is really devastating. I pull mine in under the...

Re: North Carolina Banana Addicts support group

Well, I have about a dozen bananas here in San Jose, CA, but I have about 130 fruit-bearing plants on our 7,200-foot lot, and that's with the house, the driveway, the sidewalk, everything. It's an...

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?

I planted a Veinte Cohol (on the waiting list a year), Monkey Fingers, Kandarian, and Goldfinger. This is great!

Re: I just saw the coolest thing on my banana plant!

I am always a little worried about possibly having the sugar water ferment or maybe transmitting a disease, so I usually just plant lots of stuff they like.

I had never seen one drink from a banana...

Re: I just saw the coolest thing on my banana plant!

Yes, I remember reading that Anna's hummingbirds used to be mostly migratory, but in many places in California, some of them now remain year round.

Best regards,

Joy I just saw the coolest thing on my banana plant!

I was watering my "balcony bananas," and a HUMMINGBIRD came by, checked me out by flying so close to my ear that it tickled, and then it landed on the rib of one of my wet banana leaves and started...

Last year, we paid $115. The reason that people are willing to pay so much is that it is listed as one of the most cold tolerant fruiting bananas. It seems like a lot, but our other alternative is...
