California Gold
If you are looking for a California Gold please take a look at my friend Stu's auction. He doesn't post much so I left a comment to vouch for him on his auction but it disappeared as did the whole comment section under his auction.
He's a great guy, and he takes care of his plants. [Auction] California Gold - Bananas.org |

Re: California Gold
Wow-$99. Is that right? I can understand these high prices for an Ae Ae, but is California Gold that rare?

Re: California Gold
It hasn't had time to fully circulate and make pups for people so prices are still high. It's also still gaining popularity as a cold tolerant edible banana. Prices will come down at some point.

Re: California Gold
Last year, we paid $115. The reason that people are willing to pay so much is that it is listed as one of the most cold tolerant fruiting bananas. It seems like a lot, but our other alternative is to build a greenhouse, because it gets just a LITTLE too cold for most varieties here in San Jose, CA. Jeff lives in Modesto, which is colder in the winter and further inland, with less climate moderation, so I'm hoping that I can grow it out in the open this way.
Last year, since I didn't have any pups, I kept it in a pot on the balcony in case I had to bring it in. When I have at least one other pup, I will plant the main plant outside in the ground, with the baby providing "insurance" against the possible death of the plant outside, until I'm sure it really is as cold tolerant as advertised. Maybe I've been suckered, but if it really does grow and fruit outside, it beats the heck out of a $5,000 greenhouse (and that's just the low end). Best regards, Lisa

Re: California Gold
It's my third time harvesting my Calif gold in my area in Salinas, CA.
And it's the only crop I harvested. My ice cream and raja puri did not make it because old winter took their leaves out so are the flowers.

Re: California Gold
Greg: You'll harvest your banana since we are in the same zone. Just put Christmas lights around it on the first and second year during the winter.

Re: California Gold
Good luck, everybody.
FYI: Jeff Earl got $180 each for two already this year so $99 is a bargain! He will be selling fewer this year than in prior years as he gave up his garden parcel and now just selecting pups from plants in his relatively small back yard. My California Gold is presently about 5' tall so I'm hoping to get an early flower this year. We're finally starting to warm up again. It was 81F here today and felt downright hot compared to the weather we've been having. |

Re: California Gold
I'm also hopeful for a fruit on at least one of mine since they went in the ground May 1st and 2 are almost the right height. The one from ebay and the one direct from Jeff. I also have 2 more from .org members and will be giving the pups away when they're ready.. the first 2 are spoken for but... I'll make sure one makes it as far south as Maryland!

Re: California Gold
Come spring time I should have extra Calif gold pups. I sold all of my bananas before winter and all I kept were Calif Gold and Dwarf Brazilian.
I found out that any other kinds will not thrive in my area here.

Re: California Gold
Benny, after this winter with 27 days of frost, I think my plantation will be thinned down some also. The CG should be fine, though.
