Hi,

very interesting and important also for Southern Brazil and the cooler regions of South America. There are also colder areas which are not very banana friendly in Southern Brazil, there are also regions with frosts in Southern Brazil, e. g. in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná.

Prata is the alias name of Brazilian! It might be hardy. But I will to try to improve its hardiness by cross with basjoo pollen, so that Prata x basjoo might also survive in northernmore areas with basjoo winter protection. Figo might be also one alias name of Orinoco, the fruits are very similar to the of Orinoco.

This article is also important for the coldest areas of Southern Brazil and for my banana breed trials. I plan to cross Mysore with basjoo pollen.

Thanks very much for this article, it might be important for Frutas Raras (my friend Helton) in Brazil and for me! Perhaps for Embrapa too.

Interesting article. Georgia seems to be also on the intersection of zones 7 and 8 which would mean that something might even be worth trying here, but surely with absolutely different selection of banana plants. Big Tom Hanks (T.Hanks) for posting this!

I read this article about a year ago...someone else had posted it here also. It seems to me that they get way too much winter damage for them to ever succeed in that area. I live in the Houston area (Zone 9) and we get winter damage here. Our success with bananas outdoors is limited so I cannot imagine that they are going to succeed in Georgia without some serious breeding work to increase the cold-hardiness of bananas.

Yes, only with breeding work to increase the hardiness! These cultivars which are tested in Georgia should be pollinated with basjoo and yunnanensis pollen! Then these new edible basjoo and yunnanensis hybrids should to be tested for longterm.

I will try some of this crosses in Brazil.

There is also more recent research by Dr. Richard Wallace, who is near Savannah, GA. I wrote about it for our little CRFG chapter newsletter, and it's available here:

Basically, there is a lot of work being done to see if there are cultivars that grow and produce so quickly that they can be grown as annuals. Their goal is to extend the range as far as Tennessee, if possible.
