When I received that Saba from them, it was about 1 foot tall and very young. I planted it in April 2009. It grew to about 14 feet the first year. It matured and fruited (see the pic!) around...

NeedForSeed: I just cut it off right at the top of the psuedostem and then let it go with no protection. These things are TOUGH.

Monster Saba "Stump"

Because of cold weather a few days ago I had to cut down my favorite banana, a Musa Saba. I was surprised at how big the "stump" was after I removed the rest. Tha'ts the biggest I have ever seen...

I just noticed a flag leaf on my big Saba. Never seen one of those bloom. Could be interesting!

It was maybe six inches when I planted it last Spring (2009). It grew to about 20 feet or so before...

sbl, I would try just cutting your Orinocos off at about 4 or 5 feet - That's what I do each year up here in Enterprise AL. They slow down and grow VERY slowly around January, but they always keep...

Well it is true...they just grow REALLY fast. They can put on 3 or 4 leaves a week when it gets really hot!

Our average low extreme here is 38F in mid January. I live 18 miles north of the Florida panhandle and about 66 miles from the Gulf coast. Each year we see about 8 or less nights where temps fall...

Yes, its a pretty big job protecting them on a few of the coldest nights during the winter. But I don't mind. It's worth it.

Take a knife and cut them off clean, and down to the point where the center is green. When the heat hits, give them plenty of water. But they can take a LOT of water even when its cold. They slow...

Let me just say this: 19.8 degrees this last winter. Other nights at 21 and 22 degrees. My Musa Orinocos received no protection at all. Of course all that were left were psuedostems, but all of them...

My Orinocos

I took these pics in my back yard this past week. So far I've got five Orinoco blooms, and I currently have a whole lot of bananas hanging! I expect about three or four more blooms before the cold...
