![]() You'll have to wait for pictures until 2/23 when they're scheduled to emerge but I peeked and it appears at least 6 of my 36 horseradish hunks are sprouting; I checked 7. (Yes, I'm bad about letting rooting plants do their thing--I need more growing projects.)

![]() Did I say 2/23? Yesterday there was nothing; today 5 are peeking up! In all fairness, these are the crowns so you'd expect them to emerge sooner. (I have 13 from 6 huge roots so they're all splits and 1 more than that.) 1/2" tall sprouts but doubles and triples on all that have emerged; I suspect my 6 roots could have easily been 72 starts or more rather than 36--these were honking big roots. Apparently I'm not the only one loving this warm spell!

![]() Promised picture day. Rainy and miserable out and I'm no photographer. (I had no idea there are dandelions in FL--buds in butter are really rummy.)
Started 36 root pieces--gave away 6 of the largest last weekend leaving me 30. All but 4 have leaves showing and the last holdouts are sprouting underground. Holy cow! I'd better find a place to garden soon....

![]() I'd give one of them a 2'x2' dedicated planter where the meandering root(s) can't escape, or a 25 gallon plastic nursery pot. I like the latter - you can just dump it out in the fall, cut the roots way back for consumption, then replant root and leaf crown for next year!

![]() My DCXL venus fly traps are definitely getting bigger now 5 days after the picture from before. It looks like traps on all the plants get bigger on every new leaf.

![]() Not very exciting but I planted a few veggies Wednesday and I have okra, beets and lettuce popping up! Not my garden so of course they're knocking themselves out to prove things do grow in FL. However, the 2 bean plants (potted with a red pepper) that I dragged down from Jacksonville are not only blooming but have tiny beans on them!

![]() Totally plebeian fare but I transplanted 28 mixed basils and some marigolds today that had sprouted a week or so ago in a common pot; I gave them their own cells. I have beans, cukes, lettuce, arugula and beets up. Silly stuff, yes, but very tasty.

![]() 24 different LOTUS! (hope they're dif.)
![]() Yeah, I'm sure I'll have lots of fun overwintering these... Got all my pots ready to go in my pond when they have sprouted enough... I really didn't expect to see SOOOO many of these actually germinate! Only 3 floaters, 2 of them worked out! More probably sprouting tomorrow! Got 10 or 11 seeds of each type for less than $15 shipped... More than a 50% germination rate for each! I'll probably only end up planting 2 seeds of each. Got a Ebay seller to recommend if anyone is interested P.M. |

![]() Hi Justin,
your mass processing of seedlings made me think, that you might be able to use an idea, I had recently, providing you can get juice in this type of container in the US: ![]() The volume is one litre and when cut in half, you get two containers of >one pint each. But here is the real clincher: Twenty of these “pots” fit snugly into your standard garden centre tray. Efficient, no gaps, and wasted space, as you would have with round pots. Unfortunately I have so far not been able to collect nearly enough empties to accommodate all of my 33 quat seedlings: ![]() It is not evident from this photo, but the little boxes contain much more soil than the round pots and I can fit 8 of them, where there are now only 5 pots. The quat are relatively slow growers and I can keep them in these boxes all summer long on automatic sprinkler. ![]() Best, Olaf

![]() Wow, congrats, Orinoko! Very cool.
Rejoining this site briefly to ask you what your method was, to root your acer cutting? How long did it take? I'm in the process of rooting some Japanese Red Maple cuttings, using a heat mat and fluorescent lights. They're covered, under glass. Very curious about your methods, Orinoko. Thanks. ![]() |
