J-Bert's Nana Grow Log
As the Book says: “Everything happens for a reason.” Just understand I have had a garden since I was in diapers, I like to collect rare things, and I customized almost everything I own. Upon discovery of this Wellspring Gardens discount count code (no longer useful) a spark of curious interest flooded my mind and for a couple days afterwards I concentrated my main focus on how to grow one of my favorite fruits. . . . An after my research I realized I like everything about a banana plant but not all are going to be easy to grow and not all will be to-my-taste. Narrowing down my variety to pick from, Wellspring had a few I recognized as possibly preferable to me. IC Namwah, Manzano, Raja Puri, Williams Hybid, and Dwarf Red were purchase around the end of June 2013. While I waited for my nanas in the mail, my friend Randy gave me one of his “unknown” pups (basjoo?)and the project began! ! ! While getting them and replanting all, I met Bananas.org and found Larry (SSDarkman619) who got me a Gros Michel and Goldfinger TC, and in Nov. got me Veinte Cohol. Still wanting another out-of-the-ordinary I found Mark (Worm Farmer) and he got me the Praying hands corms. While nearing the end of the year I decided to take a chance and grabbed a Blue Java (Official) from Merce3, who got it from Rpmlmnz! Now, I think I got a good start. I’ll keep anything I receive from y’all updated on here. I’m certain I can at least respect the taste of all these bananas to some degree just because I’m actually a dog and I eat almost everything edible; and some of these may not stay in my collection but I will leave all my history with these here. ***(Be patient, I recommend at least 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor w/10Mbps connection ) IF PICTURES SHOW Out-of-Whack try zooming in or out (hold Ctrl then - or + )*** Alright, so I plan to keep 1 month updates coming! My mixture for all/each: 1 part local perfect npk “Custom” compost 1 part Sta-Green Flower/Veg garden soil 1 part Nature Naturally Garden Compost 1 part MG Potting soil 1 part K-Gro Premium Potting soil, 1 part Moo-Nure organic Compost 1 part Azomite 1 part perlite. . . Just my scientific experimental ingredients for hopefully the best bananas ever grown. lol *knock on wood* Each got a 7 gal grow bag (got 25 grow-bags for $12. . . never tried them before!) All were re-potted 9-8-13. -------8-6-13---Partial Sun Adjusting to NC climate--------------Full sun 9-10-2013---------------------------------------10-1-2013 Green House --------------------8-6-13--------------------Manzano--------------------9-10-13----------------------------------------10-5-13-------------------- --------------------8-6-13--------------------Williams--------------------9-10-13----------------------------------------10-5-13-------------------- --------------------8-6-13--------------------Raja Puri--------------------9-10-13----------------------------------------10-5-13-------------------- --------------------8-6-13--------------------Dwarf Red--------------------9-10-13----------------------------------------10-5-13-------------------- --------------------8-6-13--------------------IC Namwah--------------------9-10-13----------------------------------------10-5-13-------------------- --------------------8-22-13----------------Praying Hands--------------------9-10-13----------------------------------------10-5-13-------------------- (I Have another PH I planted Upside-Down under the soil, Worm Farmer hooked me up with 'em) -------------------8-22-13-------------------Praying Hands Upside-Down---------9-23-13--------------------------------10-5-13-------------------- --------------------8-6-13--------------------Gros Michel--------------------9-10-13----------------------------------------10-5-13-------------------- (SDDarkman619 Got me these v GF v and ^ GM ^ for a deal) --------------------8-6-13--------------------Gold Finger--------------------9-10-13----------------------------------------10-5-13-------------------- --------------------8-6-13--------------------Basjoo-------------------------9-10-13-----------------------------------------10-5-13-------------------- (Good Friend Randy gave me this ornamental for FREEE) I guess I might as well throw these Ears in hear too! Re: J-Bert's Nana Grow Log
So before I went for this greenhouse purchase I knew it would be beneficial to establish a pond in this thing.
This pond helps provide extra nutrients to my plants and at the same time providing protection from winter to my "outside" ponds plants. Fishes/tadpoles poo poo in here too! I going to add my heaters to this inside pond into winter to help maintain the temperature and humidity of my greenhouse. As for the Bananas I must admit 9-6 a Bird got inside my greenhouse and knocked most of them off a 3' shelf..... So After RE-Potting these they TOOK OFF again! I only found and killed a couple caterpillars. I am really watching how these are developing individual characteristics and am maintaining my determination for fruit into next year! +The elephant ears are developing awesome! Most have branched off into multiple tubers! And I installed a camera Inside the green house for when Bigfoot shows up! I'm hoping to plant MOST of my nanas in this area (between the stones, about 15' away from the sun-room) And in front of the sun-room I will plant multiple different Elephant ears and flowers. This whole area was poorly managed this year and morning glories took over and spiders moved in! Re: J-Bert's Nana Grow Log
Yeah December Mother Nature a little too nippy for my babies to play in the cold.... I realize near freezing is not good enough. All still alive thank-goodness.

0 Praying Hands-----1-25-2014----- 1 GoldFinger-----1-25-2014----- VIENTE COHOL + REAL BJ + Upside-down PH = MIA! ooopsie too much cold. I realize Bananas are a tropical fruit and require protection especially when below freezing outside the greenhouse. I tested my luck to the limit an I feel fortunate to still have so many left. . . I have found my limit. I believe the established Tissue cultures, I stated with are more cold tolerate than sufficient sized corms cut from mother plants. Rot has definitely showed up and stole my upside-down PH. Worm Farmers other PH is holding on but sloOOWly rolling out after getting hit with 32° twice in December. January has been awful colder weather; am doing my best-est to retain heat and light. I feel really bad about loosing these member provided plants and will try to reconcile my poor treatment/bad judgement. 3 Gros Michel-----1-25-2014----- 4 IC Namwah-----1-25-2014----- 5 Manzano-----1-25-2014----- 6 Raja Puri-----1-25-2014----- 7 Williams-----1-25-2014----- 8 Dwarf Red-----1-25-2014----- Last edited by jbyrd88888 : 01-26-2014 at 10:14 AM. 5 Manzano-----4-20-2014----- 8 Dwarf Red-----4-20-2014----- So this Will Not happen again: Tested my soil beginning of April (should have tested much sooner) found a high level of Chlorine. No, I have never used tap water, so I can only believe I've been compromised. I replanted all as soon as I realized... Can't do much more than I already have. I never give up... not easily at least. Can't watch my cameras 24/7 but I have a LOCK on my GH now. Any instance I think I've been tampered with again Police will be notified Again. Last edited by jbyrd88888 : 04-20-2014 at 02:18 PM. |

Re: J-Bert's Nana Grow Log
First of all I'd like to give a shout out to Nicolas Naranja for the educated suggestion of these newest bananas... I started all from corms supplied by none other. He got me Baloy, Raja Puri, Dwarf Namwah, Dwarf Puerto Rican Plaintain, and Williams. All very viable established corms. Thanks again Nick. I decided to update this log today because Dwarf Namwah just cracked the surface today! ALL of his corms were planted 5-3-2014!
SSDarkman619/Larry hooked-me-up once again. He got me the Goldfinger, Manzano, and Veinte Cohol. Great deal from California. Thanks Larry The Basjoo and Maurelii were supplied by my local farmers market. I still have my friend Randy's Basjoo but I probably won't take many pictures of his anytime soon... Was the only banana that survived winter! Richards Grow More 16-8-24 FRUIT FUEL is here to help out! Thanks Richard. Manzano - Goldfinger -Veinte Cohol June 9 2014 GF and RP showing pups ALREADY! I'll replanted these further apart when I make enough space for them. Baloy 6-9-2014 Mother didn't survive/may have fruited already but shot up two puppies! Basjoo 6-9-2014 3 Pups... can you say: Easy to grow! Love it! DwarfNamwah 6-9-2014 Mother corm didn't survive/may have fruited already but, LOOKIE a lil' pup finally! DwarfPuertoRican 6-9-2014 This is the mother restarted. Huge already and growing VERY fast! New leaves are steadily pushing out the last... I'm having to help unroll the leafs??? BOOM! Maurelii 6-9-2014 Waxy/shiny leaves are cool lookin'. Gettin' fat quickly. RajaPuri 6-9-2014 This is the mother restarted from short corm. Williams 6-9-2014 Mother didn't live/may have fruited already but huge pup already none-the-less. I haven't pulled any leaves off any of these this year yet. Re: J-Bert's Nana Grow Log
Manzano - Goldfinger -Veinte Cohol 7-7-2014
TC grow slow (period)... Just hope they get big enough to survive winter. Baloy 7-7-2014 These two pups have easily doubled in size in 1 month. Basjoo 7-7-2014 8 Puppies! Can't get enough fertilizer, sooo easy to grow.... This is my other basjoo I got from a friend... Divided the pups and all will receive special treatments. DwarfNamwah 7-7-2014 No pups but growing perfect. DwarfPuertoRican 7-7-2014 Still growing fast but i'm still having to help unroll the leafs. 2 Pups! Maurelii 7-7-2014 Widest p-stem of them all but so short and no pups. RajaPuri 7-7-2014 No pups yet, none-the-less it looks very happy. Williams 7-7-2014 This single pup sprouted from the mother corm and is flawless... maybe my fav. Last edited by jbyrd88888 : 07-07-2014 at 07:45 PM. |

Re: J-Bert's Nana Grow Log
Manzano 8-16-2014
Bi-Mother was pretty much two plants when I received but.... 5 little pups popped up recently! I wonder if they will survive transplant into pot for winter? Goldfinger 8-16-2014 Did much better than last year! Has 5 nice lil' puppies. Veinte Cohol 8-16-2014 Didn't get off to a great start... I think it's big enough to survive winter indoors... No pups. Baloy 8-16-2014 No puppies but both of these are beautiful... I should split them soon much before winter? Basjoo 8-16-2014 Too many to count... I already gave a couple away and found a potential home for more. I think this one gave me 11 pups and just today I found 5 more pups already sprouting! DwarfNamwah 8-16-2014 Wellsprings Namwah from last year looked kinda like this one but I love how this dwarf is staying short and thick. No pups and seems slower than the rest but it had a slow start. DwarfPuertoRican 8-16-2014 6 pups... I removed/potted two to see if it would speed growth of the others. This banana took off after I planted it and is growing much taller and faster than I anticipated, I love it. Maurelii 8-16-2014 I haven't deciding if I want to winterize this one inside my GH!? No pups but p-stem is Much thicker than all my other naners. Waxy! The leafs are directed upwards; I am not sure for any reason for this yet? RajaPuri 8-16-2014 This one has not pupped yet but the two pups that came from the mother corm I started are ready to be separated... competing for space. Williams 8-16-2014 1 lil' 1" pup is not doing much but the mother looks happily healthy. I have learned very much so far about these bananas and I'm sure I have much more to learn but having the opportunity to gaze and observe these is an eye-opening experience. Re: J-Bert's Nana Grow Log
Manzano 9-28-2014
Can't complain. Goldfinger 9-28-2014 (Also a small pup in the Greenhouse not shown) Veinte Cohol 9-28-2014 Did not take transplant forgivingly. I have it in my GH to keep it extra warm at night. Baloy 9-28-2014 Mother corm on the left is feeding 2 pups and the middle and right one have been separated from the mother corm and have adjusted nice. Basjoo 9-28-2014 I already gave a few away and will have plenty to continue next year... I will try to overwinter this clump outdoors. DwarfNamwah 9-28-2014 Seemingly adjusted into its pot transplant. I swore this corm must be dead BUT! Something might survive from this in winter. DwarfPuertoRican 9-28-2014 All year the tight leafs struggle to unroll. Gypsum and lime did not hurt or help. This lil' pup will be kept inside during winter...maybe. Maurelii 9-28-2014 Still throwing leafs nonstop. RajaPuri 9-28-2014 These should survive winter I hope. Williams 9-28-2014 This is doing great adjusting to its pot. Still life from the corm I left planted... Maybe I'll have a nice one to split before frost? IceCream 9-28-2014 Finally on the grow log... This is my second attempt with this Ice Cream cultivar. Re: J-Bert's Nana Grow Log
Rather than wrestling them out of the greenhouse to take a picture of them I'll post a picture of them just after my GH got moved and sprayed with fung/mold/insecticides.
And left to right Dwarf PR plaintain, Red Abyssinian, Basjoo. All naners are okay and none have died yet but, have sustained damage from wind and temp. before the move. Last edited by jbyrd88888 : 10-26-2014 at 02:14 PM. |

Re: J-Bert's Nana Grow Log
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE ! ! ! So yeah I still have to consider myself a newbie banana grower after winter hit hard but I'm happy to say I only lost my Veinte Cohol; it was my smallest least established. Temps in the 90's this week. July update should look good I hope. Baloy-6-21-2015 Basjoo-6-21-2015 BlueJava-6-21-2015 Farmers Market Find-6-21-2015 Needs ID???
