The crape myrtle I purchased is a red rocket. It blooms mid july through I think October, I think all do right? I'm guessing it's about 4 1/2-5 ft tall now. site says it can grow up to 5 ft per yr. I'm not kidding 5 per yr. MAYBE it's grown a couple inches.....I would love to be sure of that statement. Mine has been in bloom about two weeks now. We bought it because it said it was hardy to zone 6 and that it was a fast grower with a max. height of 20-30ft. It sounded perfect for us and we do love it . I just wish it was a little taller. My main concern even though EVERYWHERE says its hardy up to zone 6 is that it's still young, still small and will probably be small for the winter. Aw heck, I'm sure it'll be OK. I just love the fact it has flowers basically the whole summer rather than most trees that seem to flower for a week or two in spring and then that's it.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention...it's so twiggy that I had to support it because the blooms would get so heavy after a good rain that the branches would bend over. That didn't thrill me.

Bill, mine do that to after a heavy rain. Good luck with yours. Five foot a year sounds like alot to me.

I have 2 crape myrtles, a Dynamite and a Tonto. Neither has started blooming yet, though the Tonto this morning has the beginnings of buds. They're late this year, maybe as a result of last summer's drought. Certainly the winter was very mild. On the other hand, they both have doubled in size.
This is the Dynamite last summer, with Mom.

I think they're awesome trees! I think the Dynamite was listed as a fast grower at the site I bought mine from. It looked the same as the Red Rocket, but I'm pretty sure something in the details made us choose the Red Rocket instead, maybe the full size? Can't remember. You said it doubled in size. That's great! So did it double in height? Would you say it's almost as tall as mom now? Because it looks about half way there in the picture.
Thanks for sharing -Bill

Mom is 4'11". I am 6'00". It is up to my chin today, so that's pretty impressive growth for 1 year. Seems pretty close to twice the height to me.
