Once the petals fell, here's the seed pod.

This one is similar in appreance to Chawan Basu, but its actually called 'Empress'. They're both beautiful.

Chawan Basu has more of a solid pink edge (but gradient) and the lines of the petals are more visible.

HBL, do you actually eat all these hot peppers? You should post some recipes (lemon balm tea turned out a winner).

Yes, definitely a a mislabled one. From what I've noticed online, many people do receive the wrong lotus through mail order. Quite understandable due to the nature of this plant. The tubers get mixed up easily.

The other day my Hibiscus clayi finally bloomed. It's a Hawaiian native plant. It is about 3 feet tall and I have grown it from seed. This is the second year and I put it in the ground earlier in the spring. We will see if it will last through the winters here in Houston.

It will freeze to the ground in the winter. In zone 9 Central Florida they would sometimes be killed outright by the cold. It gets colder in Houston. Create an outdoor green house on the south side and it will do better. I think you already know this. Best wishes!!!

Yes, I actually do eat all of the hot peppers I grow! Great the lemon balm tea was a success - I've been drinking it for years now.

Oh you want a recipe for the hot peppers, do you? Well here it is...

INGREDIENTS:

~ pair of scissors
~ 1-2 hot peppers of any variety
~ one plate of hot food

METHOD:

Take the 1-2 chili peppers and using the scissors, cut small rings into one plate of hot food. Enjoy!

Simple like the lemon balm tea - but how I enjoy them best.

It was actually just my attempt at being a smart-ass again, Bob! I don't really have any exact recipes, so I just cut the peppers into my plate of food, but I also cook them in sauces, soups, chilli, etc.

Anything you want to add spice and heat to, is how I use them. On just about everything, basically. No, I do take nights off from the heat but not many.

Cool. Precisely what I need to know right now.
I have... LOTS and LOTS of chilli peppers right now and I'm curious:
What is the best way to prepare the chilli pasta? You know, the Mexican one, with some unknown additives (like what makes that pasta so special and fleshy)...
Do you have any special recipe for that?
Sauces would be another interesting topic in the recipe section.
Thanks.

Sorry Jack - I've never even had it, let alone have a recipe!!!

: O

All I know is whatever you're making, you add enough hot peppers to satisfy your personal taste. It's different for everyone. I usually add 10 little hot peppers to a pot of sauce, but for most that would be just way too hot, so it's whatever you like. Experimenting is everything when it comes to chili peppers.

Whatever you're making, just use scissors to cut little rings into the dish, or right into the pot. I even fry up hamburger, strain off the grease, then add 2-3 chilies and a couple cloves of garlic. Then I add some fresh tomatoes crushed up with my fresh grown basil, and pour it over pasta. A quick and easy, but delicious meal!

: )

P.S. Note: 2-3 chilies in this recipe would burn the lips off most!

I should send ya some bhut jolokia seeds, Bob. Then talk to me about hot!

You cant be that old to remember the old alka seltzer commercial.............sorry , forgot you're in Canada
By all means send some seeds................I think?..........Sounds like they're for cooking , not eating. Ever try making home made hot sauce? Other than the usual poppers etc. that everyone does this is pretty satisfying and lasts long after harvest. Food process them add salt, and just enough vinegar to cover. Let it sit a few months( I can never wait longer) strain and you have your own yearly vintage. Depending on your blend or single pepper concoction it can be excellent.
