Looks like phoenicia is very similar to alata and quadrangularis. The scent of the flowers is certainly interesting. Not exactly a typical sweet flower smell but interesting! Very beautiful.

Thanks again!

Yes alata and phoenicea flowers are almost identical quadrangularis is close. If it has two bright yellow glands on the petiole, leaf stem,it is phoemicea. No real difference in the taste of fruit between the two. You will need to pollnate the flowers with another passiflora ,caerulea works

'Fredericks' in bloom

It's in a container. Do you think it'll set fruit?

If there are pollinators around, it'll set fruit. I don't have many around, so if I want nice big fruit, I have to hand pollinate. Just a q-tip, works great and is quick and easy.

Awesome. I live five hours away from where the plant is, so I'll make sure my dad does it for me. Will the fruit ripen by the end of the growing season?

Given that it's still a small plant, shouldn't take him more than a couple minutes a day. Yes, they will ripen. It takes mine a few months to ripen, but your plant will get a lot more heat than mine, so will probably ripen faster. I can't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure I've harvested into January, certainly December. I've never had ones that didn't ripen because it was too cold.

Here's a couple different varieties of Passiflora edulis: Fredericks and one I grew from seed of fruit from a plant in Moorea, French Polynesia. The flowers are very similar but distinguishable. In general, the Moorea one has more purple pigment on various parts, including the stems of the plant. Haven't been able to get the Moorea one to set fruit, despite being out there playing bee, with my q-tip.

Default Re: Passiflora

Hi all, I need some help with id of my passiflora. It was sold as P. quadrangularis, but I realised straight away it wasn't the case as the leaves had 2 petiole glands, so my conclusion was P. phoenicea (according to: Passiflora alata Key). Before the flower buds opened I started to suspect that as the bracts were very small, hardly noticeable on many of them. Also the sepals seamed the same length as the petals, so I again checked the petiole glends and found some leaves (very few) with four of them. Today the first flowers opened and I'm even more confused. sepals do look shorter than petals, but not so much, the color is not as red as with P. alata, but not as purple as with P. phoenicea. Now I believe that it is either a cross between P. alata and P. phoenicea, or a variety of alata. Could it be that P. 'Ruby glow' is a cross between this two, or a form of P. alata? I've read that what used to be considered P. alata var. 'Ruby Glow" is now a separate species P. phoenicea. Again, maybe P. phoenicea and P. 'Ruby Glow' are not two of the same taxa... BTW, mine has purplish-lilac petals outside and the corona filaments seam much longer than those of P. phoenicea. To conclude, the plants has traits from both species. I was going to upload the pic, but can't do it straight from my camera, is there a way I;m not aware of? Many thanks.
