Before the flower buds opened I started to suspect that as the bracts were very small, hardly noticeable on many of them. Also the sepals seamed the same length as the petals, so I again checked the petiole glends and found some leaves (very few) with four of them. Today the first flowers opened and I'm even more confused. sepals do look shorter than petals, but not so much, the color is not as red as with P. alata, but not as purple as with P. phoenicea. Now I believe that it is either a cross between P. alata and P. phoenicea, or a variety of alata. Could it be that P. 'Ruby glow' is a cross between this two, or a form of P. alata? I've read that what used to be considered P. alata var. 'Ruby Glow" is now a separate species P. phoenicea. Again, maybe P. phoenicea and P. 'Ruby Glow' are not two of the same taxa... BTW, mine has purplish-lilac petals outside and the corona filaments seam much longer than those of P. phoenicea. To conclude, the plants has traits from both species. I was going to upload the pic, but can't do it straight from my camera, is there a way I;m not aware of? Many thanks.

Could be a hybrid of the two. I have fruit with this cross.

thank you Sunfish, that's my guess too, but I haven't had any experience with them before, only the info available on the internet (so much incorrect info there). btw, the color of the petals and sepals is actually a lot darker, richer purple than the camera captured, more blue hues than the red. i pollinated one flower with it's own pollen, and the other with P. caerulea, although doubt the fruit will manage to develop as it is only a matter of days when the min. (night) temps are going to drop below 15 centigrade. i'd appreciate if you'd tell me what's the min temp the flowers/fruit can stand, for P. quadrangularis too? I am expecting P. quadrangularis flowers to open any day. Also, is there a registered hybrid of P. phoenicea and P. alata? If yes, what would be the name? Sorry to bother, but searched the web and haven't managed to find any info on this. Many thanks!!!!

Phoenicea is fine at that temp.Even night time temp. of 50f is fine.Phoenicea will hold fruit all winter here with lows in the 40's.I have never got fruit on phoenicea with it's own pollen but caerulea works every time.I don't know of any registered hybrid but there must be one.Quadrangularis I don't know about other than what I've read ,no personal experience.

P.phoenicea glands,I have never seen more than 2

Photobucket

P.alata glands 2 and sometimes 3 or 4.

thank you very much for all the info + beautiful pics!! still, will have to bring it in soon as the winter is approaching and cut the longest stems + try to root the cuttings although haven't had much success so far. my mystery passy is definitely not pure P. phoenicea, so we'll see... i'll try and pollinate flowers with it's own pollen, that of P. caerulea and P. quadrangularis. If there is no registered hybrid of P. phoenicea and P. alata (any direction, which is REALLY strange) you could do it!!!

Right now no one is running the register.

My alleged P. quadrangularis turned out to be P. x decaisneana, the flower is enormous. Should've paid more attention to details when tried to id it, such as the size of the stipules, ahh well...[IMG][/IMG]

You're right Tony, apparently P. quadrangularis is very difficult to grow in conditions different from those in it's natural habitat, especially in our extremely hot and dry summer conditions. Have done the pollination in all possible combinations, so now am hoping it was successful and the fruits will manage to develop, even though I doubt that...
