Beside that,
today was our hottest ever measured day in May, with 35°C!!!
At my house I had 32°C yesterday and today.
The same what you are saying happens in Ticino, the southern canton of Switzerland. There it is warmer than in northern Italy, because of the lakes!
Maybe similar to Croatia, or other regions along the northern mediterranean cost.
Temperatures fall only rarely below zero. No subzero days! The coldest nights are usually around -5°C, but not even every year. And that is only two hours from my place.

Mine grow too, however they got sunburnt today. Pahari Kela still sits ducks. I don't understand. It's not rotten, roots and bulb are perfect, the p-stems are fine, no damage... Well, only time will tell. It's their 4 day in the soil...
Anyways, early news: Apples are starting to get really big. Harvest in June? July? Ante, you are invited for apple pie (štrúdľa) and of course "some with apple made baked bread like thing" (žemľovka). Actually, you all are invited...

I will see, my faith in the plant world doesn't allow me to draw back. I simply feel the urge to do it... I must make them grow...
This is what I hate about my lowland. The temperatures in winter are steady somewhere at -7°C the whole winter and then suddenly every winter a cold front comes just for a week or less and we drop to -13°C for one night and then go back slowly. I hate the cold fronts.

. One of the most interesting microclimates is in Bulgary you know. So south, it should be hot in the continental part, but each year they have hard freezes of -20°C...
I once saw them packing the Trachycarpus trees into heat coils.

Marcel, so it only just occured to me, could you please give us (zone 8 and lower) some advice as to what to do with overwintering? You must have tried a lot... To a certain level (and height) it shouldn't be a problem, but you mentioned difficulties with overwintering (which I kinda counted on, so...).

I don't understand, because I was talking to some guys from Ukraine about it today and they said it's no problem in their country. Neither is it in the Netherlands, Czech rep., even Scandinavian countries... And if it's not problem there, how could it have been a problem in you country, which is significantly warmer in certain regions?
Just curious, wanna make sure, that I do all the necessary things in the October.

I know now that winter potting is one way to do this. What about other ways. Have you experimented with Frank's technique or was it just a one go and hit try?
The tallest bananas I have will be something about 3,5m high (p-stem + leaves - Pahari Kela) and the room in the greenhouse is just up to 1,8m or so... But the Pahari Kela should be special in liking these lowered temperatures... even the maximum day temperatures are best below 34°C to 35°C.

Could you describe the soil warming up and the issues in Sw. more in detail? Thanks.

What kind of bananas are your friends growing in those countries? And how do they store them in winter?
Potting up works well as long as you have a bright place to store them. Unfortunatly, I don't have.

My experience with bare root worked good with d.orinoco and d.brazilian, but it takes a certain time to get back into growth again. And because of the little growth they only get in our clime, it was waking them too much after one or two winters.
All the other kinds where rotting!
There was musa misi luki(beautiful plant and fast growing, but becoming tall), FHIA-18( one of my favorit and alo fast growing),williams hybrid,mahoi,dwarf frensh plantain,ice cream, thousend fingers,cardaba, and two or three others from which I don't remember the names.

Of all the edibles, I would say William's Hybrid, Grand Nain, Bordelon, Velutina Pink, Orinoco (large).
It seemed to work fine for them.
Also, I know people in Germany, who oerwinter in this fashion also Ensete ventricosum 'Maurelli' and other... no problem so far...
Couldn't it have been so, that you kept them in moist air? Might that be a problem.

Also I would maybe have one other option. Would you like to hear it?

Yes, let me hear your opinion.
The first time I over wintered bare rooted I lost many types because the temperature was maybe too long between 0 and 5 degrees, but never below.
The only one that survived without problems was musa sikkimensis.
They usually rot from the inside out just above the corm.

Well, Marcel, I basically want to adapt some of the technologies our (Slovak) nurseries do, when they want to impress the buyer in spring with already nicely bloomig plants with quite a strong growth.

The small trees (up to 2,5 meters) are put out of the soil for winter and moved into dark position. Their roots are never bare, as it would slow the growth early in the growing season and the plants would possibly lose the blooming time. This soil element is important, because when properly done, it can speed the plant in the spring by almost 3/4 of the winter reconvalescence time (not like potting, a little soil, just to enough to cover the basic root bulb).

Basically, they take some bag made off hard materials with tight sowing (difficult to cut through) and they put the roots inside (in soil ! ). Watering is regular, every month (but in case of bananas, it should be in much smaller amounts, if at all...). The bag lets water go away.

This way, the plants may start growing, if the temps are ideal, very soon.

Maybe the temperatures were too low (10°C and more) and maybe you just had bad luck... Dunno, will try this new method.

Jack, I was advised by frank and others to keep it in a room with very low temperatures just above freezing.
I made the experience that the chance to bring the pseudo stem through winter is better when the root bulb is kept dry.
I tried more than once to keep some of the roots alive with a wrapped root ball as you are saying, but unfortunately my biggest dwarf brazilian close to blooming died last winter because of that!
To keep the bulb clean is also something I was advised by experienced Americans. The roots mostly die back anyway.
Maybe it would work better to keep it at a warmer place, around 10°C.

If I still had the place in my garden to plant out some other types, I would like to try again. Unfortunately I don't!
