Yeah that ABB cultivar will be super easy for you to grow.

I throw away almost all of the lightly variegated ones like the one I sent you but they still look cooler than the all green ones and you should get some decent offshoots.

The roots still looked good but no new roots were forming, might have been to early though. I replaced the top half of the potting soil with play sand.

I've never used play sand or pool filter sand and I believe play sand to be finer than pool filter sand and not finer as in better, I actually consider them both terrible. I don't have a sand chart in front of me at the moment so my numbers might be slightly off. Horticultural sand is about 40 times larger than pool filter sand which will improve the aeration and I would recommend horticultural sand because it works really well. But I use a grain size that's double the size of horticultural sand because it works a lot better than really well. Roots just need air and moisture to acclimate to a substrate, moisture is super easy to add but if there isn't enough air in the beginning it's difficult to add later.

I would never buy a specific size sand because I prefer buying two screens. One screen that's the correct size and one that's one size below that. This allows me to remove any grains above and below the grain size I want.

Anything that has Horticultural in it's name is probably going to be expensive.

I have had good results using Quickcrete Sand from Lowes which is pretty cheap. Not sure about the grain size.

Just to be clear, you had good results with a variegated Florida.

Have you tried it with a variegated a'ea'a?

I'm sure you know that most bananas will have good results in play sand and pool filter sand and that's why it's important to be sure you are talking about a florida or a'ea'e.

I’ve had good results with my AE AE with 60% vermiculite and 40% topsoil. Just what’s for me.

The a'ea'a is the banana I spent the most time studying so it's great getting information from others.

Two important questions.

How often do you examine the rhizomes and what's the rot rate to growth rate?

For clarity, I was addressing a readily available source for course sand that I have used successfully for leafless pups and corms. I have not grown a Variegated Florida or a Variegated a'ea'a.

It's good to be clear. The tiny Pisang Awak offshoot I sent Charles was going to grow in anything he put it in. What you're growing can be more important than what you're growing it in. The fruit of Pisang Awak sucks but it grows well and if it's the best that will grow in a certain climate people will acquire a taste for it. Loquat are my favorite fruit and I agreed to trade an a'ea'e for a Big Jim but I wanted some fruit with it so I could be sure I wasn't going to waste my time digging a hole. Big Jim are terrible compared to what we grow here but people in the states seem to think they taste great.

This is how the Florida I bought on ebay looked the day I received it and it's a good example of how different substrates affect the plant.

There are millions of different mixes that will work, this seller used a soggy organic mix which promotes nice leaf growth but tends to rot the roots. The leaves did look beautiful but the roots fell off when I removed the pot. It also looked like they made a few practice cuts before they were able to separate it from the mother plant.

This may not look perfect but it was much better than the first a'ea'e I received in a trade. That was a funny day, I opened the box and picked up the plant and 90% of the rhizome fell off as a mound of slime. I figured it got cooked during shipping but contacted the seller anyways and I was told he had to trade it because it was in bad shape and would have died if he kept it.

The most important thing to understand is that the condition of a plant when it is received is not nearly as important as how it's new home is prepared.

Those partial cuts in the photo needed to be removed completely because they would never heal and would just continue to rot.

The only part of the plant that's important is that triangle shaped thing inside the red circle, as long as that's in good condition everything else is simple. Tissue culture labs have to work in sterile condition because their gels can get contaminated. Sterile conditions aren't necessary if you don't use gels which makes it easy for anyone to do if they have air, water, and a knife.

You started with an excessive amount of really long roots which looks cool but is completely unnecessary.

I have no idea what you did, but the first thing I would do is cut them back to about a 3" length because it makes potting so much easier and too many roots has an adverse affect on aeration initially.

Just out of curiosity did you trim the roots?
