Seeds From Blue Java Ice Cream Bananas

It will be much easier for me to let someone else do the teaching and be the first seller and when that's taken care of I will be happy to make my hybrid seeds available.

Seeds are 5 cents each plus shipping.

If you're interesting in growing seeds from a Blue Java Ice Cream Banana post your zip code (US48 only) and I'll message you when we have extra seeds available. Thanks

Members that are successful growing these seeds and also post photos will have access to seeds from others cultivars we pollinate.

Just harvested a large Blue Java bunch that was hand pollinated.

Ice cream banana has seeds when it is pollinated

Ice cream is seedless banana when not pollinated

Ice cream banana does not self-pollinate

Edible banana cultivars that are pollinated can produce seeds.

Edible banana cultivars that are not pollinated don't produce seeds.

Think of a supermarket banana like a supermarket egg.

If a supermarket egg is fertilized it can produce a chick.

If a supermarket egg is not fertilized it doesn't produce a chick.

Here's some photos of three common edible banana cultivars that will easily produce seeds if there's a compatible pollen source within a quarter mile.

ABB Blue Java

AAB Manini A'ea'e

AA Veinte Cohol

The two most common edible banana cultivar seeds I see for sale on the internet are Blue Java and Manini A'ea'e seeds. But you should be cautious because even though those seeds are very easy to produce there's no way to be sure the seeds actually originated from those fruit. And even if they did, it's important to realize they will not produce Blue Java or Manini A'ea'e seedlings. Each seed, if it germinates will produce a new variety and you won't know if these new varieties are seedless or seeded until after they bear fruit.

I would like to purchase seeds. But you will have to coach me to get them to germinate and grow.
I would rather purchase a couple pups, but beggars cant be choosey.
Thanks,

Gabe can correct me but but to my knowledge Ice Cream does not have viable seeds.

The start of this thread offers Blue Java seeds from a commercial grower. I just assumed they knew what they were offering.

Re: Seeds From Blue Java Ice Cream Bananas

The average hand pollinated Blue Java bunch produces well over a thousand seeds.

This tiny Blue Java bunch I just cleaned had over 800 seeds.

Gabe has been incredibly helpful with my breeding program and he has already posted that he doesn't have any breeding experience with banana cultivars that have balbisiana genes. To my knowledge the Ice Cream banana has an ABB genotype and those two B's signify that it has two balbisiana genes.

Can you share with the members what you based your knowledge on.

Will these seeds make plants? I'm confused by the comments in the thread. If they do are you sharing/selling seeds? I'm interested.

I never assume that someone will correctly repeat what I write but it does seem wrong to call these seeds or any other seeds regardless of their origin "Blue Java seeds" when it's certain that they won't produce Blue Java plants.

I read those same comments and was very surprised that no members corrected the misinformation but it did make me realize that some members probably need more time to learn the basics about the sexual reproduction of bananas before I start sharing these seeds.

I don't know if momoese is the original source of the misinformation or if they are just repeating nonsense they read elsewhere but it was obvious they have no knowledge or experience on this topic.

Interpreting written information that isn't directly related can sometimes be challenging but it does seem difficult to believe that anyone would think that an edible banana with extremely high seed production would be infertile.

"Seeds of cultivated bananas

When edible bananas that have residual fertility are used in breeding, the number of seeds produced is generally low to very low. Both seed viability and seed dormancy can impact on germination rates. In a study of the products of crosses between 20 East African highland banana cultivars and Calcutta 4, the number of seeds per bunch ranged from 3 to 26, with an average of only 9 seeds per bunch. Of these seeds, only 42% had embryos, of which only 9% germinated following embryo extraction and germination in vitro."

The main reason I recommend to newbies that are interested in using edible bananas in their breeding programs to start with the Blue Java is because it has been the most fertile edible banana plant I've worked with so far and initial success is much more fun than failing.
