Mskitty, i use to have some kind of thorn plant bushes around the front of my house.
When we 1st bought the house years ago, we forgot to pay the water bill and the water company came to cut the water off! I watched the man about 30mins trying to cut off the water. He couldnt do it! Finally he turns to me really frustrated and said " Lady please tell your husband to pay the bill today!I cant get at it because of these sticker bushes! I Laughed and laughed!
Even the cats wouldnt go near the sticker bushes! Now i have a white picket fence around the front, I had the bushes taken out! But i want to plant some kind of sticker(thorn) plant on the back deck to climb up to the upper deck, to make sure no heathens can climb up and get US!! LOL

Today I planted the years second batch of seeds. I find planting in batches works as insurance for thermostat failures, power outages, the cats sitting on top of the propagator etc.
Anyway, I split the seeds into 2 lots and have soaked for a couple of days in pre-boiled water in 2 ways.
1 batch in GA3 gibberellic acid and another batch in cape smoke primer. I'm then planting up in fine mix coco fibre with about 15% perlite. the seeds then go in sealed plastic containers (from the local chinese restaurant) like tupperware.
All in the propagator, heated coil with probe sensor 33C daytime / 15C nights.

E. Glaucum
E. Superbum
E. Ventricosum

M. Nagensium
M. Flaviflora
M. Thomsonii
M. Sikkimensis X Chini Champa (Helens Hybrid)
M. Itinerans
M. Acuminata

fingers crossed
will try and remember to post if/when things happen

Hi!
I sowed seeds of Musa rubinea today, my first bananas ever I soaked them in a warm water for 24h before, and now put in a cake box with cover. The box sits over (not on) the heater. Now I' m waiting what (if ever) will come out of it

Thanks Richard. I forgot to write Kandrian and atemoya. Those are in addition to the ones I planted. I have just one more room for either dwarf orinoco or dwarf cavendish. You see I planted them at the plat that I was working on. And before nighttime I put clear plastics around just in case it gets pretty cold. And most of them I put plastic pots cover if they are small enough and some of them Christmas lights if they are too big.
I am babying them now. As for the soil I got me a truck load of compost and here's my proportion. 4:1:1 (compost, 1/4"rocks, small bark chips and shovel fulls of horse manure. Once they are established I have a very good fertilizer for them.
What would you plant Riichard dwarf orinoco or dwarf cavendish?
The plat will be protected from the elements once I am finish.
Also, I did not plant a new cherry tree but I gave it a new life.
That tree used to be planted atop a concrete floor on a wine barrel. Last year I broke the concrete so the roots can penetrate the soil underneath. Today I saw it to be full of tall grass around out of neglect and the soil were so dry and the tree appeared to be stunted.
I built a wood partition around the tree and fill it up with my mix after I pull all the weeds out..
I hope she will give me a lot of fruit as she did last year. And boy, were they delicious.
And here's her picture for just a branch:

The banana expert in your neighborhood is AnnaJW and I see Dwarf Orinoco is one of her naners. I plan to grow it too, and skip Dwarf Cavendish.

Thanks, Maestro. That's a good decision because dwarf cavendish seems to be temperamental as far as temperature variance is concerned. My dwarf orinoco is so green and healthy and did not brown a single leaf during this winter.

New to the forum and new to bananas.
I planted 1 Ice Cream and 1 Golden African. I have an ornamental red banana (don't know the type) that has come back for the last 3 years, but I'm hoping to grow some edible bananas in Savannah, GA.
