Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
Planted a Gold something today. The seller could not remember if it was Goldfinger or Golden Pillow. I bought both previously from Aloha Tropicals. One is a Namwah, the other is 1000 fingers, and I figure I'll be able to tell which Gold it is since they are quite different. No pictures as it's just a sword sucker with a fat corm.

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
Haven't quite planted it yet but today I purchased a Mai'a 'Upehupehu, a Hawaiian Iholena type which is very rare. It's in the Kepler & Rust book on bananas in Hawaii. From the Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in Captain Cook, HI. I'm sort of on a mission to get any rare Hawaiian variety I can, since I'm in a BBTV free area (as far as I know) where they have a good chance of surviving.

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
What's different about 'Upehupehu is that the fruit are more round like a maoli type, so they look quite different. Supposed to be a good dual purpose banana that tastes like other Iholenas.
The only Iholena I've fruited is "Red Iholene" which is a mutation of Iholena Lele. It was pretty good tasting that I can recall. |

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
Planted my tallest Namwah from a wee little 5 gallon pot to the freedom of the outdoors. Yes it's still mildly frosty on occasion this time of year but I've got protection and it really needed a better home.

Who would have thought that banana plants would be a commodity. I know that Dan has more stuff than he has room for, so he could be the Bank of Bananimal.

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
What took you so long? Going Bananas has been selling them for years. At least, from what I can tell, it's the real FHIA-02, Mona Lisa.

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
I went there also. I was the 7th person through the door. Was looking for a giant Plantain then for some unknown reason I wondered off ending up at the Dragon plants where I got one of them and some fertilizer..

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
haha, That's what I was thinking. But, then again, sometimes I seem to look all over for varieties and forget that Going Bananas has them. Cheaper too.

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
I couldnt bring myself to pay $20 plus shipping or driving 180 miles. If I could get him to reply to.e-mail it would be different. I am competition so I am sure I get treated differently

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
Nick, I figured you had a good reason, I was just curious to know what is was.
Good luck with the FHIA-02. You seem to do well with all of them, so I'll be interested to see what you think of this one. It has been a slow grower for me, but that's true of all the varieties that I grow that have only A genes. They seem to need more warmth to thrive than my climate provides. |

Re: What did you plant today (bananas)?
Yes, NK Lago Farms is my farm and it's mostly for fruit but i am expanding the nursery side of things. But, its hard to beat $15 for a 3 gallon plant, unless of course you are buying suckers from me. I have tried before to get fhia 21 AND FHIA 23 from Don and I get no response. I might use a straw buyer to see if i could get a different answer.
