It's 10pm and 100F. I've decided that Las Vegas is not an appropriate climate for bananas.

Vel,
I'm guessed that prolonged death valley temps combined with 8% humidity made you do it. I felt that way after the 9 day freeze this year did so much damage to my naners. The concept of growing stuff where a green house is required with an AC unit comes to mind. That would be nuts, and too much added expense! Post pics - include the machete in full swing! Clobbered a Raja Puri while moving my compost pile around. The stem broke over at the ground. It's not completely dead, but will be set back.

Wasnt today but thought this was the best place to post my lesson learned. Killed three basjoo plugs and half of my wifes small starting herbs/seedlings/sunflowers/etc a month or so ago.
Note to self, when they say antibacterial soap is a bad thing as a surfactant? they are NOT KIDDING. Within hours I had mushy stumps everywhere, guess I should have read the label a little more carefully. But at least the pots were aphid free from there on in... |

Goodbye to my tomato plants
we havent had a lot of rain and they were in small pots so they didnt stand a chance even with daily watering and they were dried up completely. There was still a little green left on top and even a few flower buds but its already almost mid august so I probably would just barely get tomatoes from those blooms assuming the ants dont get to them first. My seedling coffee plants were almost gonners too since they got burned up from the sun (even though they only see about 30 minutes of sun and its when the sun first rises), but I noticed the problem and now its inside so hopefully it will survive!

Hello Ante,
Not even a chance to get it under control..is here to stay or stay for a long time.. Is truly a mess we got the new about it in 2008 and nothing was done(in Public parks etc.) we are in front of the biggest park in Miami Beach with 100 years old trees infected..they all fly across the street. Is the game we all play here in Miami (LOL),blame it to your city government or your neighbor the thing is nobody seen to do anything and in the middle all trees, palms and Bananas are dying... I try all my best washing and applying stuff but is gone for a couple days and come back with a revenge . All my palms are sick too. Here are couple links so you see How we dealing with it: July/05/2011 Pesky white bugs make sticky mess - Miami-Dade - MiamiHerald.com |

Does an animal count? I caught and killed a rat that had been digging up plants and chewing up everything. Also found a nest in some empty black pots. Threw some of the pot's out with the garbage. If anyone near Austin wants some 5-gallon pots let me know. Promise they'll be free from rodents!

I kill invasive Argentine ants just about every time I go and check on my plant. For some reason they seem to love it. I hope they're not tending aphids...

Probably my beautiful and tall Papaya tree
It was a 1 foot tall seedling this past May when it went in the ground, and I dug it up early so that way I could pot it up and give it some time to re- establish itself (it is currently 6 feet tall from the soil to the top leaf). Unfortunately, the soil by me is really rocky which makes digging plants up really difficult so I only got a small amount of my Papaya's roots. I watered it well, cut off some leaves, and Im hoping for the best. Wish me luck! In another month, my banana plants will be dug up so Im worried about those too
