Angry Re: What did you kill today?

My Ae Ae. I went out this morning to see the stalk lying on the ground with the bottom 3 inches basically mush. Between the cold of winter and the few days of heavy rains, it seems to have done it in.

Lots of weeds, some big Monzano corms and pups, some really big Namwah plants and corms, a couple Pisang Klotek corms, a ton of Stuttgart Canna (all of it), some geranium, more grass and weeds.

Next week I will kill all of my Lemon Ginger, Heliconia plants, Hawaiian Apple matt, Dwarf Cavendish matt, some Raja Puri, and some Dwarf Brazilian. Oh and more weeds and part of the rear lawn.

The following week I will kill a huge stand of Giant Bird Of Paradise.

I'm making room for more food crops.

Peter ----- I have had so much trouble keeping my 2 AE alive I
am becoming an expert at trauma ER gardening. The same pstems are still in place pushing out new leaves for 3 years. The cold snaps kill off the summer leaf growth and new leaves continue in the spring. The main pstems keep getting fatter and the pups get a few inches taller. This plant is just too touchy. This year I plan to dig up the whole mat with the smaller 6 ft pstem and plant it in a hole with 100% fill of peatmoss and bark. I'll also mix in some sulfur with the fill. We'll see.

Even though your main pstem collapsed watch out for pups emerging. Dig out all the mushy pstem. If rot looks too extensive dig up the whoe mat and cut out and pot the pups with some good corm attached from the mama. If there is any.

I ended up digging up the corm and trimming off the rot. Its just a waiting game now to see if anything sprouts from it.

All my Ice Creams seem to flop over as they get taller. Was going to dig one that wasn't doing well out and get rid of it. Was able to just pull the whole 5' stem out easily. Bottom was mush with some very happy corm weevils. Need to get more aggressive with them. They seem to love Ice Creams and wreak havoc on them. I catch as many around my Dwarf Brazillians but they seem to cause little damage to those. So one more Ice Cream dead, and likely soon to be more.

Mahalo for sharing your yard photos. It seems like most of us are attempting to create, with varying degrees of success, what you can do in your back yard. My yard in Los Angeles is my little piece of Hawaii in an attempt to hold me over until I can move back to the Aloha State (at least part time) in another 4 - 5 years.

I might try me hand at aquaponics in the future. I've been following a fellow board members foray into it and it looks pretty fun.

This week sometime I plan to dig up my Saba mat that produces little/poor fruit and replace it with SH 3640.
