Re: What did you harvest today (bananas)
Nick, I'd be in heaven if my Gros Michel bunches could get that big! Would love to taste and grow FHIA 17&23 if I could ever find them for sale where I live and see how they are in comparison.

Re: What did you harvest today (bananas)
The fingers in the top hand were 9" long and in the bottom hand were 7.5" long. Grade went from 42mm in the top hand to 33mm in the bottom hand.
For me the advantage of the FHIA-17 over the Cavendish is that the FHIA-17 will ripen to yellow without gassing. The cavendish you have to seal in a plastic bag to get them to ripen to yellow. |

Re: What did you harvest today (bananas)
Lady Finger. 16 months from tissue culture to harvest. I let it sit for 4 days in my office. When I went back to work, it got so ripe, the skin started splitting.
Fruit isn't bad. It's tart compared to the normal dwarf brazilians I eat but still better than Cavendishes. The taste reminds me of biting into a honey crisp apple. Last edited by cheson74 : 10-16-2013 at 04:27 AM. |

Re: What did you harvest today (bananas)
So not actually today's harvest but rather some of the unsold fruit I had at market on Saturday. I was in Weslaco, TX until Friday and came back and had some harvesting to do.
So, the back rows are goldfingers, the forward right are njalipoovan, the forward center are Williams, the forward left are P. Klotek. After reading Stover and Simmonds I am almost convinced that P. Klotek is not what this variety is. P. Klotok is listed in the book as the Indonesian name of Pisang Awak. What we call P. Klotek is certainly in the Mysore group and perhaps it is the real "Misi Luki" |

If you bunch prune or have a naturally small bunch, you can get the fruits on Namwah up to sizes rivaling the weight (not length) of your average supermarket Cavendish. Nick posted some good advice about that on some thread. Namwah can't be beat for toughness and productivity in my climate. |
