Re: An Update Of My Latest Nana Plants 2018!
HMelendez, I haven't read the entire thread but the last page 5 and page 1. I'm still confused how these plants will grow in 100% pool silica sand. Are you supplying all of the nutrients via liquid? Doesn't that get expensive? Also in post #31 there are some bananas showing the rootballs and it looks like normal soil, not the white silica sand I see your bananas that are in the pots in the same post. If you could clarify, that would help greatly.

Re: An Update Of My Latest Nana Plants 2018!
HMelendez, also how do you make those clear dome extensions? Do you just buy the dome and cut out the top to stack them? How do you seal it so water doesn't evaporate through the cracks?

Kanana, Thanks for seeing, following the thread!.....This is from post #202 and #203 of the thread!... Quote:
*****My reply/response***** Donald, From post #193 of the thread......."That is pool filter silica coarse sand!......The soilless medium that I used for Nanas in pots or in the ground!....Has a bigger grit than normal/regular sand!....Keywords DRAINAGE and AERATION!"....... Very simple!.....I frequently keep amending/adding nutrients to the top soil of my Nana mats!.....Biochar (crushed wood charcoal), coffee grounds, egg shells, vegetable/fruits peelings, Nana leaves or pieces from prior harvested Nanas, etc..... I first tried pool filter silica coarse sand with the Beautiful, Royal and Majestic AEAE and it did worked!......Trust me, AEAE is one of the toughest Nana Varieties to grow and see it flowering, blooming!.......If it works for the AEAE, it should work for most Nana Varieties!......Right now, I'm using pool filter silica coarse sand with all my Nanas!.....Beautiful, Royal And Majestic 'Ae Ae' Is Flowering! Also, in reply to the post #31, it looks like normal soil, but trust me, it isn’t!.....It is a soilless medium/mix!.......A mix of sphagnum peat moss, perlite and pool filter silica coarse sand!....

I guess the pool filter sand allows the roots to branch out faster in addition to allowing water to drain better to counteract the large volume of rainfall we get in Florida. I have noticed some of my plants in soil with high organic content have "floated" up over the season due to soil saturation which makes them vulnerable to toppling by wind. I wonder if Hector's technique works in soil that is highly acidic or salty i.e. main corn planted in a hole of his mix but with surrouding soil highly acidic or salty? |

So do you first start the smaller pots in YOUR soiless mix and let it grow in that, until it needs repotting, then add it to those much larger pots with 100% silica sand? Reason I ask is those large pots look like 100% silica sand as it is pure white. Perhaps you just cover the tops of those large pots with 100% silica sand instead of your mix? Lastly, with your mix, do you use 1/3 of each part for your mix? Thanks so much. Your success with your bananas is something I'd like to duplicate. |

Clear packing tape or scotch tape? Also what's the best way to cut it so they stack? Using a box cutter blade? Does the second tier stack without the tape or is the tape crucial for structural integrity? I wish they designed them from the get go to be able to stack as you have done, similar to the worm bins that stack allowing you to buy each extra level and they are made to stack. Re: An Update Of My Latest Nana Plants 2018!
One more thing HMelendez, maybe I should have PMed you instead of posting here, but for the sake of other people wanting to make these expandable domes I figured it is relevant to the thread. Best I can find price wise on Amazon is a 10 pack of the 7" humidity domes for $49.99. Were you able to get a better deal than that? Seems pricey for what it is. Having said that, I'm pretty sure I paid more than that when I bought mine several years ago. Just seems expensive for a clear piece of plastic... $5 each???

Kanana, I just use the soilless mix (sphagnum peat moss, perlite and pool filter silica coarse sand) only for Nanas in small to medium pots!.....Then as they grow larger, bigger, I transplanted them to bigger pots using only pool filter silica coarse sand!.....For Nanas in the ground, only pool filter silica coarse sand has been used!.......As you mentioned, I used 1/3 of each for the soilless mix!......Thanks for the comments!.....

Kanana, I use waterproof clear tape from Home Depot, but regular clear tape will do the trick too!.....Trust me, it's completely seal!......In all the tiers (clear plastic humidity domes) you need to use tape on them for structural integrity!....You can use a normal scissor to cut the top off so they can stack!..... That is an awesome deal!....Thank you for posting it!........

Re: An Update Of My Latest Nana Plants 2018!
HMelendez, another question about the sand. Where do you find yours and what are the best deals for quantity/price/bulk? I saw this on HomeDepot, but it doesn't seem like coarse sand.
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Quikrete...-202314677-_-N Price is reasonable which is why I was hoping this is what you used. Yours almost look like pebble sized instead of beach sand. |

I mostly dealt with 6/20 [real coarse], 20/30, and 30/65 [very fine]. I have a bag of pinch a penny coarse sand which I tried hectors home brew and with my experience with potted bananas concluded I do not have enough experience to use it at this time. the graduation of the sand from home depot says 20/40, pinch a penny does not give a graduation on their sands but I would say home depot sand is about the same size the coarse pinch a penny coarse sand. the home depot sand MIGHT BE a bit more coarse. the price on the home depot sand is better than half the price for the same size bag.
