[Backyard Banana Joe]

Thank you Rene (Greenie) for dropping off this beast! I hope to grow it up into an amazing specimen!



Now, I just need to get it through winter without it dying. If the thread abruptly ends, you know why



Plant upon drop off:











Several weeks after receiving it:

The plan is to plant this spring in a full sun location with plenty of fertilizer, water, and mulch (wood chips).

Joe,

I would not say murderer, I have seen posts of your other plants and they look amazing. AeAe from what I have read are very deliacte/finicky and that is why I am not spending money on it.

Well, I am an AeAe murderer...... A hardened criminal.


So yes, I can say with certainty, they are harder than any other banana variety I have grown (so far) so it will be my personal challenge to not kill it/grow it into a beast.

I got a nice Ae Ae from Rene this year. When the weather turned cold the big leaves browned up. Planted it in a sunny location and applied 6-3-16 - the "Super Fruiter" fertilizer.

Watering with fish emulsion solution and am waiting for new leaves to push. The trunk is still firm so no rot is happening. When things warm up later it should push new leaves and get fruit by late summer.

That is awesome!!! Getting back into it huh?! Mine looks absolute trash as well.


Hope it pushes soon for you, mine stopped but is now starting again. We can race them..... See sho can fruit theirs first. What do you say?

Thank you! I have probably killed more AeAe than anyone you know as well

She seems to be pushing the cigar out more everyday! Hope to get out the leaf this week.

I haven’t really tested this.... but NANAMAN reportedly had them surviving into the low thirties with minimal damage. I am not sure about how much cold it can survive, but I would guess not as much as other varieties.

Really though, I second the AeAe being so difficult. They really just don't take well to anything less than alot of sun and heat.

Good luck with yours! Still looks good so far, just a bit grumpy at the "cold"

Thank you! It definitely looks like trash now but is still pushing the leaf.

Short update... winter is definitely hard on this plant. Most leaves have died, however it has some shreds of green left on the newest leaf and a new one coming in..... Grow grow grow!

I like the mirror idea, I have something similar.
It defiantly makes the plant look slimmer
It does do the job.

I am bringing in on cold night nights but otherwise I am keeping it out. I always have it in full sun. Merry Christmas!
