My New York Office Bloom

Hey everyone!

Last fall, I decided to take one on my smaller Banana plants to my office and set it in the window. I figured it might spice up the place a little and save it from the rigors of a New York winter. Well, it thrived. Over the winter it doubled in size, appearing to LOVE my 7th floor window.

Now imagine my surprise when last week, it shot out a BLOOM! Crazy! And look at the tiny pot it is in. I was just hoping it would live, never thinking it would do this!

wow...I would never have guessed it would do that... Now if they ripen and are edible... Double wow.

1) What type of Banana is that?

2) What was you watering and fertilizer (& type) schedule?

You aren't going to believe this, as I sure didn't. I walked into the office this AM to find....BANANAS! This is really blowing my mind!

edwmax - The last six months it has been in my office, I have done nothing but give it lots of water. Last summer when it was outdoors, I did give it "Banana Fuel" (15-5-30) as I do all my banana plants.

As for what it is, I am not sure. I did order some Ice Cream babies from Wellspring Gardens a couple of years ago. I also have some hand me downs from relatives in Texas that just called them "Plaintain". I've done so many splits in the past two years I kinda lost track of which is which.

Anyone care to attempt an ID?

This is only my second bloom ever, and my very first bananas! My first bloom was last summer, and there was no fruit. I thought for sure my outdoor plants (MUCH larger) would be the one giving me bananas...not this one!

It’s kinda hard to ID because its small! Looks like you will have at least 2 hands! Very cool! It will drop flowers and sap. You may want a trash can under the flower! Excellent job!

After looking close it’s a Musa tall Orinoco. Most likely from your family down here!
Amazing job!

Also take your finger and touch the “sac” under the flower. You can taste the banana nectar! It’s very sweet!

I agree with Ty above. The plant does look like an Orinoco. ... So now let's get a few of the fingers to fatten up.

Get some potassium sulfate (ala: SOP; or Sulfate of potash), dissolve some in water by putting a handful or two in a couple of gals of water. Use this to water the plant weekly. ... The solid sop will settle to the bottom, just keep adding water to dissolve. ... the pot is a bit small for the plant, so I suspect the plant will take up water quickly. Just make sure the soil doesn't become soggy.

OK! I have done this and started today. How exactly does this work? I didn't realize that simply super-dosing Potassium would "fatten up" bananas.

We're all about to learn since your nanas are container plants in a temp controlled environment. ... But dosing seems to help fatten the top 3 or 4 hands for in-ground bananas in about 45 to 60 days if we have the time before first frost.

so here is my question: so... is it true that after this plant blooms and produces fruit it will no longer grow and die?

I have heard this and read this many times,, but is it always true???

Yes ... The fruiting pstem will die producing the bunch. This may take months. The only growth once it flowers is the bunch & fingers. ... BUT, the good news is the corm dosen't die. It will grow a new pstem (aka: pups).
