I assume the holes were present when the leaf emerged. Could be caused by an insect of some sort, a few granules of fertilizer dropped down the emerging leaf causing a burn, etc.
Don't lose sleep over it.

I guarantee you a caterpillar got to it when the leaf was still rolled up in a cigar and that's why it looks like that. They love fresh tender leaves
How do I know? It happened to a couple of mine and I found the culprit both times coming back for seconds!!

Yeah, that’s happened to me too! I was wondering what kind of yucky bug could be causing it! Now I know! It’s good to know you don’t have to worry about it! Thanks for the info!

Bugs are yucky
Slugs will do a taste test also.....but they are long gone before you notice. |
