Exclamation Help! My plants are stinking up my house!

I know that this a very odd question to ask. Now remember since I live in Northeastern Ohio I have to keep my plants inside my home over winter. Which normally I am okay with but unfortunately it is causing a problem I didn’t even think of!

Now the plants are fine and not dying or dead by the way. However, I think b/c of using peat moss as my soil it is causing a very bad odor in my home. It is so horrible to have my furnace or central air on and boy that stink really gets bad! My home is clean and usually stink free! Now I do have a garage but no heating in there so I am guessing I can’t move them all in there for winter. So what in the world can I do to get rid of smell? Short of throwing away the plants!

Thanks in advance....

What a problem to have! Try not watering too much and changing the soil. If the problem persists, overwinter it by cutting off all leaves and putting in a garage of basement around 50 F. replant in the ground next spring.

I know! I never thought that plants or soil could stink like hot cow poo! Thanks for the advice! I’m going to go to my garage and put a thermometer in there to see what the temperature is. I didn’t realize that it could go down to 50 degrees and the plants would still be fine! I might also have to go buy different soil asap! I really appreciate your help!

Thanks! Yeah I’m so hoping no bugs this time! I hate bugs! Eww!

You mean to tell me that I’m not the only whose house might smell funky b/c of storing plants for winter? Glad to know that!

Hmmm, I have never actually had such an issue, and I got no idea what has actually caused this issue. I also hate it when something is smelling bad in the house, it just annoys me so freaking much! I actually think that you could try and change the soil, as it is the most common cause for this kind of issues. But are you sure that it is caused by the plants?! I would actually recommend you to call for the services of mymaid.co.nz as they have got some of the best maids, and probably they would find the real cause of this smell.

I'm thinking it's gotta be something in the soil(like the peat moss as you wondered, or the type of fertilizer you're using), because I've also never had that issue *knock on wood*.

Hopefully you can pinpoint it, then just change it out with the next pot ups

Hiya Re: Help! My plants are stinking up my house!

Yes I can officially say that the stink has since gone away! Yay! Word to wise though... Don’t ever feed your plants that are indoors with Bio Biz Grow! OMG that stuff stinks!

Yeah I learned the hard way not to feed my houseplants anything organic - all inorganic based ferts for the housebounds.

Glad you figured out your situation

Yippee

I looked up that stuff; who would have thought something made from beet sugar would cause such a stink?

Between the odor and the name Bio in the label, I was expecting some horrific concoction
