Hi folks! Is anyone able to identify the banana in the following photo link?
One of my trees grew a 50# bunch of these giant, double bananas. Each banana had two distinct bananas within the skin. The meat was sweet and of good consistency. Only a tad starchy (so maybe a plantain?). I have several more pictures but the one in the link should be representative enough. Thanks! Photo is here: Banana Gallery - Sappy Ferret Gallery

Not really sure - but the fruit looks like a skinny Hua Moa sample...
If it is firm fleshed, I would let it sit until the skin turns black - then wait an extra 2 days and slice it up width wise. If it is salmon or pinkish inside, then it is a sweet Hawaiian plantain. I would make each about 1/2" thick, fry in oil & drizzle with honey.(Maduros) If it is not and goes mushy - I don't know, and if it stays firm then it's most likely a plantain of some kind. Good luck! ~Che

Can't say I've heard or seen anything like that. I'm hoping one of the subject matter experts on this forum can chime in. Very cool.

The only thing I found on google was this:
"According to experts around five percent of bananas can grow into 'double fingers' but most are discarded. While double bananas are understood to be very rare, in extremely rare cases four finger bananas can grow." It doesn't spell out if a double banana can show on a bunch or is the whole bunch double bananas. I'm hoping Gabe, PR-Giants, etc can give some more info. |
