Cold Hello from Germany!

Dear Bananafans,

I am very in love with my banana plant.

I got it as a gift last spring and last sumer was outside and during the winter inside. During this summer she grew up so much that she cannot fit in my small rented apartment. Now I have a problem, because I am not sure about what type of banana is really about and is there a real possibility to leave her (Her name is Lily) outside.

I would apreciate very much your help if you could tell me what kind of banana I have and how should I treat her during the winter.

One friend of mine told me that should be Musa Acuminata, but she is also not sure.

In Germany winter is not that extreme cold, like average -2C.

Wish you all the best

Dein Deutsche ist better than mine, LOL.

Wilkommen Ortici. Hop onboard the Banana Express.
-2C is around 29 I think, and still too cold to leave outside.

Bitte. That explains it! My family goes back almost a thousand years through the Dochlers und Von Hattens. The old family home is now located in France (border moved after the war), and it is over 800 years old. My grandmother was from Trier.
<--- Good stout Bock!

Edit: What part of SD are you in? I lived in Lemon Groove for a while back in '88.

Welcome! Looks like your presence here has kicked off a bit of an Octoberfest! While i dont speak German, I do love German beer, soooo...
As far as you banana plant, there are several threads on here related to winter storage techniques. One in particular involves removing the plant from its pot, washing all the soil from the roots, and storing the plant laying down in a dark space. This may give you the option to keep your plant indoors. How large is it?

So, around 2m high. The thing is that in the last few months she lost a lot of leaves, but she gave us 2 new plants. Not sure is her life now at the end, we will see. We are still waiting for warmer days to bring her out. Thank you!
